Benedict Cumberbatch has recounted a harrowing experience from 20 years ago when he was robbed and kidnapped while filming in South Africa. In a recent interview with Variety, the Oscar-nominated actor, known for his roles in Marvel‘s Doctor Strange, Sherlock, and The Imitation Game, shared the terrifying incident that occurred during his twenties.
At the time, Cumberbatch was filming the series To the Ends of the Earth in South Africa when he and his friends got a flat tire while driving. They were subsequently robbed and abducted by six men, who forced them into a car and drove them around for hours before eventually abandoning them.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Cumberbatch said: “It gave me a sense of time, but not necessarily a good one. It made me impatient to live a life less ordinary, and I’m still dealing with that impatience.”
He also acknowledged: “The near-death stuff turbo-fueled all that. It made me go, “Oh, right, yeah, I could die at any moment. “
This experience led him to take risks, such as skydiving, but notes that he didn’t have any dependents at the time, apart from his parents.
Reflecting on his experience with blockbuster hits, Cumberbatch shared his thoughts during an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.’
He remarked: “Well, I think it’s a testament to Jon Watts and the three… Jacob (Batalon), Z (Zendaya), and Tom.”
He continued, praising the blend of homage and originality in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’: “They’ve got this beautiful John Hughes homage mixed in with the ultimate universal love there is for that kid. That hero, for Spider-Man and Peter Parker. And it was such a good script. It’s such a good concept. And then there was that ‘little secret’. It was so much fun.”
