According to new Nielsen data, last year’s most-streamed entertainment title in the US—the top dog of 2024, if you will—was an Aussie Blue Heeler puppy.
Released yesterday, the research firm’s annual Streaming Unwrapped report estimates that Americans watched 55.62 billion minutes of Bluey (pictured) on Disney+ last year—and the two to 11 demo was responsible for 43% of this viewing total.
This makes Bluey 2024’s most-watched series in the US, ahead of long-running adult favorites like Grey’s Anatomy and Family Guy. SpongeBob SquarePants on Paramount+ also made it onto this most-watched list, taking 10th spot with 27.87 billion minutes.
Gabby’s Dollhouse (Netflix/Prime Video) cracked into the top-10 streaming originals list, coming in at number nine with 10.74 billion minutes. And although Prime Video’s competition series Beast Games premiered very late in the year on December 19, it managed to rack up 700 million minutes in just this narrow timeframe.
Overall, Nielsen’s report noted that US audiences spent more than 12 trillion minutes streaming content in 2024, representing a 10% year-over-year uptick.
Younger-skewing titles also did quite well in the feature film ranking, where nine out of 10 most-streamed movies last year were family-friendly and animated. (Prime Video’s PG-13 live-actioner Red One was the only exception.)
Disney’s 2016 pic Moana took the crown here, generating 13.03 billion minutes of watch time on Disney+, likely buoyed by anticipation for Moana 2, which hit theaters in November. The Super Mario Bros. Movie on Netflix came second, with kids ages two to 11 accounting for 5.7 billion minutes of its viewing total (11.72 billion minutes). And Trolls Band Together (7.44 billion minutes) and Paw Patrol: The Movie (6.05 billion minutes) also made the top-10 cut.
To recognize top-performing streaming titles on an annual basis, Nielsen also announced its inaugural ARTEY Award winners, including Bluey for Most Streamed Overall and Moana for Top Streaming Movie. (ARTEY is an abbreviation of Audience Rated TV Entertainment of the Year.)
