Alex Cooper revealed that RuPaul has been her “toughest interview” on her “Call Her Daddy” podcast.
The Unwell founder explained that the interview was “tough,” because she “wanted to impress” her “absolute queen,” she said in a new interview with Marie Claire published Tuesday.
“I wanted so badly to have Ru love me,” Cooper shared. “Recognizing my privilege, I was so aware that I needed to show up for this person, and I needed to prove why they should be sitting with me.”
Cooper, 30, added that she “worked so hard” to “stay toe-to-toe” with the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” host, 64, during the March 2024 episode.
“I really wanted to garner the respect,” Cooper said. “I knew that Ru would love the show, but they just had to have a good experience.”
Cooper and RuPaul chatted about his family trauma, his past struggle with addiction, his relationship with husband Georges LeBar and how he’s dealt with being a celebrity.
Cooper explained elsewhere in the Marie Claire interview that she has prioritized making celebrities –– like RuPaul, former Vice President Kamala Harris and Miley Cyrus –– “feel safe” with her.
“I have been on many shows — not to put other shows down — but the host is looking five inches to the right of my head and reading a teleprompter and asking me questions,” she recalled. “It’s very dehumanizing. Almost like, ‘Wait, I don’t even know if you actually knew my name.’”
The Unwell Hydration founder said that her goal with each interview is to make “someone feel seen and heard and understood and making them feel like you actually care about what they’re saying.”
“Yes, I care about the celebrity sitting across from me, but I also care about my audience, so I’m also trying to get as much out of them as I can for my audience because they’re going to learn something today,” she added.
Cooper began building her brand when she launched her “Call Her Daddy” podcast with Barstool Sports in 2018, but she left the company three years later for a $60 million, three-year deal with Spotify.
Cooper made headlines once again when she signed a whopping $125 million deal with SiriusXM in August 2024.
