Parker McCollum kicked off his tour this past weekend at Penn State and things did not go as planned.
The young country music star didn’t get very far into his show before apologizing to fans — telling them he was feeling ill — and leaving the stage. He returned to social media on Tuesday to give an update of what went down that night, and it doesn’t sound like he had much fun.
“Long story short, I was in a meet and greet before the show, and I had about two people left, and all of a sudden just out of nowhere — Bam — I felt it in my stomach,” he said in a video shared to his Instagram. “I said, ‘Man, I’m about to be very, very sick.’ I knew that something was pretty wrong, and spent about an hour sitting with my head in my lap, trying to kind of make myself throw up just to see if that would make me feel better. I couldn’t really do it, show time rolled around, and decided to try to give it a go.”
McCollum said he felt OK through the “first couple of songs.”
“And then the more I was singing and pushing, you know, it just became apparent, and I’m sure you could tell in the crowd, that I was not doing well up there,” he said. “I’ve never had to walk off stage in the middle of a show in all the years I’ve been doing this. That was absolutely the worst thing ever to have to end a show like that, especially so early in the night.”
McCollum said he headed straight for his tour bus when he left the stage, but didn’t make it.
“I was in the bushes for about 10 minutes, just as violently sick as I have ever been in my entire life,” he said. “Spent about the next 48 hours basically in the fetal position, you know, just incredibly sick. Just as unbelievably ill as I have been my entire life. I wish that on nobody. But feeling a little better now.”
McCollum said he thinks he will be good for his weekend shows but still isn’t 100 percent.
“First weekend of the tour, not how I wanted it to go,” he said. “I just appreciate all the fans there in Pennsylvania for showing up. The crowd was electric. The arena was sold out and, you know, everything was kind of teed up to have a great show in that first weekend of the tour and could not have been more of the opposite.
“You have my word,” he added. “We are working on a date sometime this year to come back and make that show up to you guys. I really appreciate the support and everybody reaching out and checking on me.”
Video showed McCollum stopping shortly into his show Saturday at Penn State.
“Penn State I apologize sincerely, I’m going to call the show,” he then tells the crowd. “I’ll give each and every single one of y’all your money back.
“It’s from the deepest part of my heart that I apologize for having to do this,” he added. “I’ve never done this in all the years I’ve been singing country music. I apologize sincerely. I hope you guys will forgive us.
“We will come back and make it up,” he added. “I will give every penny you spent tonight back to you. Thank you so much.”
