Even the royal family is haunted by the questions that plague so many of us mere peasants when it comes to our children’s schooling. Sure, most of us down in the town square aren’t deciding which of the highly elite (and equally expensive) boarding schools our kids will attend. And we’re not considering the same kinds of security threats. But, just like Kate Middleton and Prince William, the masses are combing through their options and trying to figure out how to give their kids the best education.
(Royals, they’re just like us!)
The Prince and Princess of Wales have been making headlines lately as they try to decide where to send their 11-year-old son Prince George. Now, a royal expert has entered the chat and is urging the parents of three to deviate from royal tradition. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror that after Middleton’s cancer diagnosis in 2024, she wouldn’t be surprised if the family said buh-bye to boarding school.
“I think it’s quite likely that, after the year they have had, and how unsettling it must have been for [the kids], … that they would all feel happier and more secure if they could remain as a tight family unit,” Bond said.
“Personally, I think it would be brilliant if they completely broke with tradition and, indeed, their own school background and sent all three children to a day school for the rest of their education,” she continued. “That really would signal that this royal couple intends to do things differently.”
Traditionally, royal kids are home-schooled (like the young Queen Elizabeth II) or sent to boarding school (like King Charles III and his sons Prince William and Prince Harry). But perhaps Middleton should heed Bond’s advice and think about sending her kids to a local school and having them return home each night. It would certainly set the Wales family apart and signal that they ultimately put their mental health and wellbeing before their schooling.
Earlier this month, multiple reports stated that — after “heated debates” — it was decided that the young royals will attend Marlborough College for kids ages 13-18. Middleton and her siblings Pippa Middleton and James Middleton all attended the prestigious boarding school that costs nearly $74 thousand per year.
And even that presumed pick would be a break in tradition given that both Prince William and Prince Harry attended Eton College. Eton is an all-boys school, meaning Princess Charlotte would eventually be separated from her brothers. At the time of the reports, Bond told OK she thought it was a “wise decision” to pick a co-ed school where the trio could stay together.
“It must have been a huge comfort for the three of them to be together at school when life at home was so full of anxiety,” she said of their current schooling at Lambrook School.
