‘American Idol’ contestant Willie Spence has given the title of “home” to more than one location. Both are currently in celebration mode.
Spence, who was born in West Palm Beach and grew up in Douglas, Georgia, is on his way to the show’s finale Sunday when the three remaining contestants will perform for the final times before viewers’ votes determine the ultimate winner.
In Riviera Beach, where Spence’s family lives, the city and community redevelopment agency are preparing a watch party on Sunday evening at Riviera Beach Marina Village Bicentennial Park. From 6 to 8 p.m., before the show begins, residents can enjoy live music, food trucks, and family events geared toward supporting Spence. According to Kristen Hicks, the event center/marketing coordinator for the Riviera Beach CRA, the event will feature tables for attendees to make T-shirts and posters.

“All the residents are excited for Willie to win this thing,” she said.
Hicks said about 200 people had already registered.
Willie Spence’s ‘sister cities’ celebrate the singer
Spence moved to Douglas when he was about six and attended high school there. Yet “his roots and foundation are here in Riviera Beach,” said Councilman Douglas Lawson, who said he helped push for the event. He called the two locations “sister cities.”
Though Spence’s immediate family will be in Los Angeles on the night of the finale, some of his extended family will be at the Sunday event in a VIP section, Lawson said. With cameras from “American Idol” present, the watch party may make an appearance via live stream on the show.
As the clock hits 8 p.m., all those attending will watch the show projected on a large screen 20 feet up in the air.
In a different state but home to Spence all the same, residents in Douglas, Georgia, welcomed him to town on Tuesday, according to WJCL 22 News.
Spence, greeted by sign-bearing crowds at the Coffee County Courthouse, was given the key to the city by Douglas Mayor Tony Paulk, the station reported. In a recorded message, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said that he signed a proclamation declaring it “Willie Spence Week” across the state.
The support, in Palm Beach County and beyond, is there. Now it’s just up to the nation to decide on Sunday if Spence will take the win.
