The story of a lesser-known royal couple is set to be at the centre of a new drama show expected to hit TV screens soon.
Amazon Prime will launch a series looking into the dating days of Norway’s King Harald and Queen Sonja before they married.
While their Majesties have always appeared to be a power couple, it appears that their relationship was not always smooth sailing when it began in 1959, with the couple having to undergo a number of challenges before finally marrying.
As reported by GB News, the series will show the struggles Harald went through when it came to marrying Sonja, as she was the daughter of a clothing merchant, as Harald was instead expected by his father to marry a princess.
When they first met, Harald was 21 and had just completed his army training as a cadet in the Norwegian Military Academy, while Sonja was studying English, French and Art History at the University of Oslo.
However, while they had an instant connection, the Palace believed Sonja was unsuitable for Harald as she was not born royal.
This was something Harald’s father, the-then King Olav, insisted on. But Harald took a firm stand against this and despite multiple breakups with Sonja, told his father that he would either marry her or stay single for life.
In 1968, King Olav gave the couple his blessing after nine years, and walked Sonja down the aisle of Oslo Cathedral on the big day on August 29, 1968.
In the series, Gina Bernhoft Gørvell will star as Sonja, with Sindre Strand Offerdal playing the role of Harald.
As reported by GB News, series producers said: “The story has all the ingredients to become a major international viewer favourite for anyone who likes unique and genuine love stories”.
King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, both 87, are still happily married today.
