About 13 years ago, Amy Miller started her stand-up career at a laundromat’s open-mic night.
Now, she’s been named as an “Up Next” comic by Comedy Central, which is also running a 30-minute special with Miller called “Ham Mouth” on its YouTube channel. The LA-based comedian will headline Loonees Comedy Corner this weekend, hosted by Miriam Rupp and featuring Jacob Rupp.
Miller, who’s performed at Loonees before, is looking forward to coming back.
“I really enjoy that club, in large part, for the staff. They’re very nice, very good to work with, which makes a lot of difference when you travel a lot for comedy,” Miller said about Loonees. “The crowds are fun as well. I like Colorado Springs. It’s a beautiful town.”
As for her set, she says she’s not much of an observation-based comic, but instead reflects on her own experiences.
“I talk a lot about myself. Me and my family, I draw from my own experience,” she said. “I don’t do a lot of political material. It’s just really like, ‘Here’s what’s going on with me,’ because that’s just what I know.”
You never know what each performance will bring, which is what Miller says keeps her coming back to the mic. And it’s not too bad of a gig, either, she joked.
“I have a certain amount of cynicism about stand-up, but I enjoy doing it. I guess the part of the job that just makes it different every night and kind of unpredictable in a fun way keeps me coming back. But I also like to not have a boss and work one hour a night. Those things are nice,” she said.
Her sign of success: laughter. Miller wants her audience to be able to just feel lighter after the show, even if it’s just for a moment.
“I wouldn’t say I want to make them think,” Miller joked. “A lot of people right now are going to see comedy because they don’t really want to think about anything that’s sort of stressful or going on in the world. So it’s really if I could provide an hour of forgetting their problems and just having a good time, then I’ve done my job.”
