Princess Eugenie has avoided following or interacting with Meghan Markle on social media for one particular reason, according to a royal expert.
The Duchess of Sussex launched a new Instagram page on New Year’s Day and has since amassed more than 1.6million followers.
Despite her large number of followers, no members of the Royal Family seem to follow her, including the Princess of York, with whom she reportedly has a close relationship.
Now, according to veteran royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, Eugenie may be following a particular strategy in order to avoid “trouble.
He told GB News: “The Royal Family wouldn’t touch them officially in that regard, but Eugenie is friendly with them and also has the Portugal connection.
“That could develop but more conventionally. I would be very surprised if Eugenie liked or was openly supportive.”
He added: “That would instantly cause comment that she was breaking from the rest of the Royal Family, who clearly are at rift, so no one will do that.
“They know it would cause instant trouble.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are known for having a close relationship with the York sisters.
Harry and Meghan have even revealed that they were out celebrating Halloween with Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, in 2016 in Toronto, just hours before the couple’s relationship was announced.
The Duchess said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2021: “The four of us just snuck out in Halloween costumes to just have one fun night out on the town before it was out in the world that we were a couple.”
Meanwhile, Harry revealed in his memoir, Spare, of the night: “We invited Euge and Jack to join us for Halloween. And Meg’s best friend Markus.
“Toronto’s Soho House was having a big party and the theme was ‘apocalypse’. Dress accordingly. I mumbled to Meg that I’d not had great luck with themed fancy-dress parties, but I’d give it another go.”
He added: “For help with my costume, I’d turned to a friend, the actor Tom Hardy, before I left home. I’d phoned him to ask if I could borrow his costume from Mad Max.
“‘The whole thing? Yes, please, mate!’ The whole kit. He’d given it all to me before I left Britain, and now I tried it on in Meg’s little bathroom. When I came out, she roared with laughter.”
