Sir Mick Jagger has expressed his sorrow over the passing of his former girlfriend, Marianne Faithfull, who died at 78.
The Rolling Stones frontman and the late singer were once the golden couple of the British music scene in the 1960s, dating for four years before ending their relationship in 1970.
Despite their split, they remained friends, with Jagger reaching out to Faithfull following her cancer diagnosis in the 2000s.
In a heartfelt tribute on social media, Jagger remembered Faithfull as “a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer, and a great actress” adding, “She was so much part of my life for so long. She will always be remembered.”
Keith Richards, Jagger’s bandmate in The Rolling Stones, also mourned Faithfull’s loss, expressing his sadness and extending his condolences to her family.
Faithfull began her singing career in 1964 after being discovered by the Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Her number-one UK album featured many popular hits such as Come And Stay With Me and This Little Bird.
Her relationship with Sir Mick Jagger was followed by the public starting from 1966 and ending about 1970. Her first single, As Tears Go By, was a hit written for her by Sir Mick and Richards.
Later Jagger was famously found wearing nothing but a rug at the infamous drugs bust in the countryside with Richards’ at guitarist Redlands in 1967.
After her split with Jagger, Faithfull spent two years addicted to heroin while living in Soho before living in a squat.
She made a comeback in 1979 with the release of her album, Broken English, which is now considered a classic.
In 1987, Faithfull reinvented herself as a jazz and blues singer with the critically acclaimed Strange Weather and entered rehab during the same decade.
Recently, she has experienced a resurgence and is reportedly admired by celebrities like Kate Moss and Courtney Love.
The daughter of a British military officer and an Austro-Hungarian Jewish baroness, Faithfull recently starred in Sofia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette.
She also made guest appearances as God in the TV sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. Her early films include I’ll Never Forget What’s ‘Is Name, alongside Orson Welles, and Girl On A Motorcycle.
