Former MTV host Matt Pinfield suffered a major stroke earlier this month, leading his daughters to seek control of his finances and property.
Court documents detail how Jessica Pinfield filed for temporary conservatorship of her father, stating he is “incompetent to make decisions.”
Just hours before the stroke, Pinfield posted on Instagram: “Starting another week with gratitude for a life surrounded by great people, life changing music, and unforgettable experiences that I never take for granted. Here to another week-another day-open heart and open mind. Let’s rock!”
His employer, Los Angeles radio station KCSN, announced: “The SoCal Sound’s legendary DJ Matt Pinfield will be taking a temporary leave of absence. We are fully supportive of Matt and hope to have his energetic knowledge of rock n’ roll back on the air soon.”
Pinfield became famous for hosting MTV’s 120 Minutes from 1995 to 1999, and again on MTV2 from 2011 to 2013. He started as a DJ in New Jersey in the 1980s before joining MTV, where he also worked on TRL and VH1.
After MTV, he became a record executive at Columbia Records, where he worked with the alternative band, The Killers. The band later wrote their 2004 song All These Things That I’ve Done about him.
Pinfield said the line “I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier” came from his work helping soldier-musicians with PTSD. Most recently, Pinfield co-hosted The Power Hour on AXS TV and joined KCSN as an afternoon host in March 2024.
