With the commencement of the spring semester at SFA, academic workloads are beginning to grow, and lumberjacks are either looking to spend their weekends hitting the books or searching for social events to take the edge off. For the latter, Nacogdoches’ nightlife has students covered.
Whether students are seeking a bustling restaurant ambience or a rowdy country crowd, there are opportunities for lovers of live performances and a good time. In particular, the Cottage Wine Bar and Restaurant houses a quaint outdoor pavilion and courtyard where local musicians such as blues guitarist Dan MacMahon can be found jamming out.
Although weekends this winter remain slow-paced, the bar’s charming bistro features heated tents and indoor dining for the cooler weather. Owners Kelsey and Stephen Gibson remain committed to maintaining a wide range of musical entertainment for customers almost every Friday and Saturday night.
“Nac has a really cool art scene, and the music is definitely a part of that,” said co-owner Stephen Gibson. “Everyone who plays here is a local artist.”
Kelsey Gibson conducts most of the music bookings and does not limit the live performances to a specific genre, which is beneficial for students seeking not only a tasty meal, but also a well-rounded musical atmosphere. “You might have opera one night and country ballads the next night,” said Kelsey Gibson.
Alternatively, Banita Creek Hall features live country music nearly every Saturday, bringing in commercially recognized musicians such as Hudson Westbrook and Ella Langley, both of whose shows have already sold out. Regular performers include Pecos and the Rooftops and Cameron Sacky Band, who have made repeated appearances in recent years.
Banita’s, as it is referred to by students, is a popular indoor venue for those strictly seeking a country concert or line-dancing experience among its disco-lit dance floor and stage. Emily Moore, a sophomore environmental science major from Georgetown, especially enjoys the line-dancing on Thursday and Friday nights to cap her week off.
In addition to Banita’s low drink and entry prices on Thursdays, the atmosphere is incredible. “When school is in session, people flood the dance floor,” says Moore. “It can often be difficult to find a spot, but I think it makes it more fun.”
These are not the only options, however. As the weather starts to warm, students can be sure to find more frequent outdoor events and live music at countless other restaurants like Naca Valley Vineyard or Fredonia Brewery, occasionally highlighting SFA music groups. Outside of live entertainment and concerts, Lugnutz Bar and Grill hosts a karaoke night on Fridays at 8 p.m. Whether it’s concerts, karaoke or line-dancing, there are plenty of musical events for students to uncover throughout Nacogdoches.
