A new movie shot in Upstate New York is generating buzz at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Oh, Hi!” is a romantic comedy from writer-director Sophie Brooks (”The Boy Downstairs”) about a couple “whose romantic weekend getaway goes awry in a most unexpected way.” Co-writer Molly Gordon (”The Bear”) stars opposite Logan Lerman (”The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Percy Jackson”) in the film, which is already drawing comparisons to a cinematic classic: “Misery.”
“Like ‘Misery,’ but if it’s funny,” Gordon told The Hollywood Reporter.
Yes, that’s right, like the 1990 movie based on Stephen King’s nightmare about a famous author (played by James Caan) who is kept captive by an obsessed fan (Kathy Bates in an Oscar-winning role) — but as a modern rom-com. Variety called it a “Gen-Z ‘Misery’ of sorts,” The Guardian called Gordon’s character a “sitcom version of Kathy Bates in ‘Misery,’” and IndieWire described it as “darkly funny.”
Brooks and Gordon (and critics) are careful not to give away many spoilers beyond that, but Logan told Entertainment Weekly he spent much of the production tied to a bed. (You’ll have to watch to find out what happens.)
Despite having some commonalities with “Misery,” Brooks told IndieWire that the story’s inspiration actually came to her while she was stuck at home during the early days of the Covid pandemic in 2020. Her agent encouraged her to write a script with a limited cast and limited locations, and Gordon helped her develop an idea about a couple in a relationship, or situation-ship, when “things take a turn.”
According to the Hudson Valley Film Commission, “Oh, Hi!” was primarily shot in Germantown in August and September 2024. The Columbia County town is located about 40 miles south of Albany.
“Oh, Hi!” premiered Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival. A widespread release date has not been announced yet.
Other movies showing at Sundance include “Plainclothes,” which was shot in Syracuse with “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” actor Tom Blyth.
