The Netflix top ten movies list can be, well, a mixed bag TBH. Each day, the streaming platform updates its ranking of the most watched options. But, just because something is popular doesn’t always mean it’s great. (Case in point: The number one movie is currently Back in Action…and as our reviewer put it, “Is this the best spy movie I’ve ever seen? Well, no.”)
But sometimes my fellow viewers get it right. And the number four film on the list is one that definitely belongs there and is definitely worth the watch. I’m of course talking about one of my favorite films of 2024, Saturday Night.
Directed by Jason Reitman (Juno), Saturday Night follows Lorne Michaels and the original cast of Saturday Night Live in the hour-and-a-half leading up to the show’s first ever live episode in 1975. The dialogue and some of the events are fictionalized, but the movie is based on a true story. And in case you forget which famous faces were involved with the initial SNL episode, we’ve got Billy Crystal, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, George Carlin, Milton Berle, Al Franken, Andy Kaufman, John Belushi and more.
As I previously wrote when I first saw the film in theaters, the movie “is funny, chaotic and absolutely enthralling. The fast-paced plot is less concerned with character development (though we do get gems involving each of the famous faces) and more focused on the perfect storm that occurred on that October night in 1975, which brought about the revolutionary show that is still airing today.”
I continued, “The movie has more than a few laugh out loud scenes (including Nicholas Braun’s Kaufman doing his iconic ‘Mighty Mouse’ number) and the one-liners fly so fast it’s hard to catch them all.”
Needless to say, I love the film. But I do have a bone to pick with its Rotten Tomatoes score.
According to the critics, yes, the film is “certified fresh,” but it only has a 79 percent score. 79?? That’s a B+, y’all, and this is an A+ movie. That score should definitely be in the high 90s in my humble opinion.
And while I’m picking bones, I’ve got another one. This fab film should have been nominated for more awards. Lead actor Gabriel Labelle was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance (he lost to Sebastian Stan), but the movie is so good it should have been in consideration for Best Picture, both at the Golden Globes and at the Academy Awards. Sadly, it was not.
But not so sadly, I now get to stream it whenever I want on Netflix.
