Pamela Anderson was made for The Last Showgirl—even if not everyone thinks so.
“No one else could play this role but Pamela,” the film’s director, Gia Coppola, recently told Harper’s Bazaar. And after reading the script—which sees Anderson play an aging Los Vegas dancer whose spectaculous career ends abruptly—the actor seemed to see herself in the role too. “I was at home in my garden and I threw my pickles in the air,” Anderson added to Coppola’s remark. “I just thought, ‘I have to do this film. This is what I’ve been waiting my whole life for.’ ”
Following her performance, Anderson collected nominations for the Golden Globes, Gotham Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards—though she was notably snubbed for the Oscars. Her name was missing from the nomination list announced on Thursday, as were Coppola and The Last Showgirl altogether. But after a career that’s been packed with ups and downs, Anderson isn’t fazed.
“Oh my gosh, it’s not something I ever expected. Doing the work is the win,” the actor told Elle after the announcement. “That’s what I like to do, and I think we can lose sight of that sometimes in this whole crazy awards season, but it’s nice to be recognized, and it’s all a bonus.”
Anderson added that an Oscar nomination was hard to picture. “I couldn’t imagine [it] anyway. I’m happy for the SAG nomination, that’s [voted on by] your peers. That’s really cool. This has been a long road promoting this film,” she concluded.
Per the film’s name, Anderson plays Shelley, a Las Vegas showgirl who considers her next move after her long-running act must come to a close. The Last Showgirl was shot in just 18 days with a budget of less than a million dollars, yet its fabulous costumes were real, designed by Bob Mackie and Pete Menefee for the original Jubilee! show at Bally’s. “Some of them still had the names of the women who had worn them sewn in,” Anderson further told Harper’s Bazaar. “I’d try to feel each woman’s energy when I put them on.”
