Paul McCartney has showered accolades on his former Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr.
Ringo, whose real name is Richard Starkey, took over as the group’s drummer in 1962, coming in for Pete Best. In an interview with MOJO magazine, Paul reminisced about Ringo’s perfect fit in the band, remarking, “Impossible to say why – he just was.”
While performing together this past December, the songwriter commented on their synergy: “It’s just amazing, actually. It’s just, yep, it’s like wearing a very comfortable pair of shoes, if that’s the right metaphor.”
Now at age 82, Paul regards Ringo as a “natural genius” for his quick grasp of fresh ideas.
He waxed lyrical about Ringo’s unique brilliance, telling the Liverpool Echo: “[In] many ways, actually. You know, he didn’t have a sort of heavy education, like a lot of people.”
“So anything he knows is self-taught, most of it, he’s very clever that way. He picks things up and is very witty. And, above all else, he’s an amazing drummer who just knows how to do it. Simple as that.”
Ringo has also reminisced about his bond with his Beatles bandmates during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, commenting: “I miss them both, George and John.”
“We were friends, we were like four brothers and we looked out for each other. When we made music, we went through moments where getting a little happy was good. So, we really worked very hard, we had a lot of cups of tea and we could just feel where it was going. For me, it was like psychic, we knew where it was going. No one had to look at you or stamp their foot or whatever.”

The 84-year-old also mentioned his late bandmate George Harrison, who he credits for inspiring him to do a genre shift.
Speaking about country album Look Up, Ringo said: “How this record came about was because Olivia [George’s wife] was reading poems for George at the Sunset Marquis hotel and I was there and T Bone [Burnett] was there and a lot of other people were there. ‘How are you doing? What’s going on?’ I’m doing this. If you’ve got a song that you think would be good for me send it down.’ That’s how it started.”
