Peter Andre’s wife Dr Emily McDonagh has opened up about her pride as their eldest daughter reaches a huge milestone in her young life.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk she revealed 11-year-old Amelia, who she affectionately calls Millie, will be starting secondary school in September and she and Peter are chuffed at the prospect.
She told us: “Our eldest, Millie, is going to secondary school in September. And I keep thinking, ‘How’? And then I feel really proud – she’s such a lovely girl.
“And, you know, Pete and I, we’ve got her through that. I know it sounds like small thing, but we’ve got her to that big milestone event,” she beamed.
Thinking even further ahead Emily observed: “I’ll be 42 when Millie’s 18. It’s really crazy. But I think – I hope – because I’m the eldest sibling [as well] – I’ve got four younger brothers – I hope that they’ll kind of she’ll guide them [her siblings] a little bit as well.
“She’s a sweetheart. She’s a lovely girl. So I’m hoping she’ll give them a little bit, little bit of guidance and sisterly love,” she said”.
Giving an insight into her eldest child’s personality, Emily revealed the youngster is brilliant with her baby sister Arabella. Indeed she said her son Theo were besotted by the tot.
The doctor went on: “She is so good with the baby and Theo’s the same, he’s absolutely brilliant. I thought the novelty would have worn off by now, when she’s nine months old.
“I thought they’d be like, ‘Well, we’re sick of this now’. [But They absolutely love her. I come to school to pick them up with her, and they are fussing over her, and asking, ‘Can I carry her?’
“They…absolutely love her and are showing her to their friends. And all the friends are like, ‘Yeah, we’ve seen her loads of times’,” Emily laughed. “They are absolutely so sweet. They actually – it’s another thing for them to argue over,” she joked.
Following Arabella’s birth in April 2024, Emily is currently still on maternity leave from her job as an NHS doctor. However, despite all the demands on her time as a busy mum, she isn’t one to rest on her laurels.
She is currently working on a campaign by European Mushrooms to encourage people to eat better and make small lifestyle changes during the dull winter months.
Given her profession, she understands the importance of eating well, but she admitted that she was surprised to learn how nutritional mushrooms are.
The medical professional explained: “They’ve got B, vitamins, selenium, vitamin D…and especially this time of year, Vitamin D is really important with the darker longer nights that we’ve been having. So I think it’s a great thing to try and get into your diet as part of your five a day.
“A recent study by European mushrooms found that about 40 or 41% of people don’t actually know about the nutritional benefits of mushrooms.
“This is why I was absolutely so happy to be talking about mushrooms and trying to get the word out there that it’s a really budget, friendly, you know, easy way to be getting some more nutrients into your diet.”
She also has a solution for parents if children are fussy eaters and won’t try them – sneak them into their food. Emily chuckled: “I do sometimes like to blend up vegetables to hide in certain foods.
“Spaghetti bolognese is the classic one, because it’s got all different bits in it already. You can hide things quite well in there. So I do sometimes try and hide courgettes and things in a spag bol. But mushrooms, you can definitely do it with mushrooms, or putting them in soups and things like that,” she advised.
Dr Emily MacDonagh is an ambassador for the European Mushrooms Nature’s Powerhouses campaign.
