Prince Harry hopes his two young children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, will take ownership of a project close to his heart when they are older, an insider has claimed.
Although the Duke of Sussex, 40, is no longer a working royal, he is still in charge of the Invictus Games, which he launched in 2014 after serving in Afghanistan.
The Invictus Games Foundation helps people previously in conflict, move forward and focus on recovery and their future.
According to a well-placed source, an insider told Express.co.uk both Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, hope their children will be part of the initiative one day. They revealed: “The Invictus Games is a Sussex initiative and something they want their children to continue once they get older.”
Originally planned as a solo trip for the Duke, 40, Meghan Markle is expected to attend the Invictus Games opening ceremony at BC Place Vancouver on February 8.
This year, the Winter Invictus Games will take place in Canada, and over 500 competitors from over 20 nations are expected to attend this year and they will compete in adaptive sports.
As well as the usual sports that feature at each event, including indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball, new winter sports will also be introduced.
This includes Alpine Skiing and snowboarding, Nordic skiing and biathlon, skeleton, and wheelchair curling. Prince Harry even tested out a few of these new sports at the ‘One Year to Go’ promotional event held in Whistler last year.
At this year’s event, American singer Katy Perry will perform at the opening ceremony along with Grammy-nominated Noah Kahan, and Canadian singer, Nelly Furtado.
The closing ceremony will take place at Rogers Arena on February 16 and will be the only “adult-only” part of the games where officials and participants can let their hair down at the end of nine days of sporting competition.
In a statement on the Invictus Games Foundation website, the prince wrote: “The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will offer a global platform to expand the range and profile of winter adaptive sports.
“With deep respect, I’m also pleased to share that the Games in Canada will be held in partnership with the First Nations, in the spirit of truth and reconciliation with Indigenous communities.”
