The journalist behind what’s been dubbed a Prince Harry and Meghan “hit piece” has now spoken out about her experiences.
Vanity Fair writer Anna Peele has recently written about the Sussexes at length in the publication in what furious fans have branded a “hit piece” and a “takedown”.
Now in a new video Peele has lifted the lid on the couple’s ongoing efforts to find their place in the world and shared her thoughts on them stepping away from royal duties, commenting on what it was like to pull the piece together.
Since relocating to the United States, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have launched Archewell Productions and the Archewell Foundation. And although these initiatives have allowed them to pursue their passions in both the charitable and entertainment sectors, Peele suggests they’re still uncertain about how to truly make a meaningful impact.
“They seem to genuinely want to make the world a better place,” Peele said in the video on TikTok, “but we’re not sure exactly what that means yet.”
The couple’s journey, she observed, has been a mix of opportunities and challenges, with a recurring theme of attempting to shape a new purpose, but struggling to articulate it. Their philanthropic and entertainment ventures have been ambitious.
Archwell Productions has produced content like Harry’s memoir Spare, which delves into his personal struggles and tensions with his family.
“Spare laid bare all of the issues and resentments that Harry seemed to be feeling about his brother and his father,” Peele pointed out, referring to the book’s portrayal of strained relationships within the Royal Family.
Peele also said how the couple’s Spotify deal, reportedly worth $20 million (around £16 million), was another effort to use their platform for good.
However, the deal produced only one podcast, Archetypes, and Peele explained: “They had amazing ideas that were scuttled by various issues including how they would be perceived, their personal safety, and issues within Spotify.”
Despite these challenges, the couple remains committed to making a positive difference, although their vision has been clouded by obstacles.
Peele’s article vividly described the Sussexes’ Montecito home, a sprawling $14.65 (Around £12million) million estate with 13 historic French fireplaces, positioning it as a symbol of their new life.
But, she says, residents of their Montecito neighbourhood, have mixed feelings about the Sussexes’ public image.
“There’s something hypocritical about wanting to disappear into Montecito but then bringing attention to it through things like Harry’s docu-series, Polo, and Meghan’s new show, With Love, Meghan,” Peele said.
The contrast between their desire for privacy and their public-facing projects has caused some to question the authenticity of their intentions.
