Princess Diana‘s childhood home will not go to either of her children, Prince William or Prince Harry, as one might think, but instead, to her nephew, Louis Spencer.
Despite having three older sisters, Louis, 30, as Viscount Althorp, will inherit the estate due to the system of primogeniture prevalent in the aristocracy.
This system dictates that titles are transferred to the eldest son, not the firstborn child, reports Daily Express UK.
Born in 1994, Louis is the eldest son of Charles Spencer and his first wife, Victoria Lockwood.
As the heir apparent, Louis is next in line to become the 10th Earl Spencer, a title that comes with the duty of overseeing the Althorp Estate.
Louis’s elder sister Kitty Spencer has talked about her younger sibling’s future responsibilities as the estate heir: “Primogeniture can be a tricky topic, because as times are changing, attitudes are as well.”
She added: “We’ve grown up understanding that it’s Louis to inherit, and Louis will do an incredible job.”
Louis is already participating in Trustee meetings gearing up for the day he takes over the considerable and historical land that comes with his lineage, reports OK! Magazine.
Upon receiving Althorp, not only will Louis Spencer become Earl Spencer, he’ll also shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding and overseeing one of the UK’s historically significant manors.
Diana spent her childhood at Althorp, nestled within Northamptonshire, relishing the pastoral life and bonding with her siblings in the great outdoors.
During specific times of the year, Althorp Estate opens its doors to the public for tours. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the historic mansion and gardens, and delve into the rich history of the Spencer family.
