Chasing 144 to win, Rubin Hermann starred for the hosts with his 51-ball 59 while Lhuan-dre Pretorius added 43 off 29 balls as the duo added 91 runs for the second wicket. The Royals achieved the win with a six off the penultimate ball of the match, hit by Dayyaan Galiem (8*).
The chase began on a wrong note when the home team lost its England star Joe Root to spinner Prenelan Subrayen on the first ball of their innings. But Hermann and Pretorius took the match away from the Super Giants.
The partnership was broken by Marcus Stoinis (1 for 22) when he dismissed Hermann.
India’s former wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik scored 21 runs off 15 balls, but his wicket in the 19th over gave the Super Giants an outside chance.
Earlier, the Durban side rode on Stoinis’s 55 off 40 balls and former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson’s 36-ball 45 to reach a respectable 143 for 7, after they were reduced to 33/3 in 6.4 overs.
Left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin (2 for 2o) and pacer Kwena Maphaka (2 for 22) took two wickets each for the Royals.
