The Weeknd is closing another chapter with Hurry Up Tomorrow.
The XO artist released the album on Friday, January 31, just a week after its original drop date. And, no, the pushback wasn’t due to the all-too-common clearance issues or unfinished work.
He announced it was being postponed “out of respect and concern for the people of Los Angeles County,” who are still dealing with unprecedented wildfires.
The project contains the previously released tracks “Dancing in the Flames,” “Timeless” with Playboi Carti, and “São Paulo” featuring Anitta. You can stream Hurry Up Tomorrow now on Apple Music and Spotify.
The Weeknd — born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye — began teasing his sixth studio album roughly three years ago, when he revealed it was part of an album trilogy that included 2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM. He touched on the new chapter in a recent interview with Variety, saying it could possibly mark The Weeknd’s swan song.
“You have a persona, but then you have the competition of it all,” he said. “It becomes this rat race: more accolades, more success, more shows, more albums, more awards and more No. 1s. It never ends until you end it.
“Part of me actually was thinking, ‘You lost your voice because it’s done; you said what you had to say. Don’t overstay at the party — you can end it now and live a happy life.’ You know? Put the bow on it: Hurry Up Tomorrow? Now we’re here. When is the right time to leave, if not at your peak? Once you understand who I am too much, then it’s time to pivot.”
Although the project might be the end of The Weeknd, he clarified he had no intentions of walking away from music.
‘Everything needs to feel like a challenge,” he continued. “And for me right now, the Weeknd, whatever that is, it’s been mastered. No one’s gonna do the Weeknd better than me, and I’m not gonna do it better than what it is right now. I think I’ve overcome every challenge as this persona, and that’s why I’m really excited about this film, because I love this challenge.”
The Weeknd was referencing his upcoming thriller flick, Hurry Up Tomorrow, which finds in the director and lead actor roles. The movie, costarring Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan, will reportedly hit theaters on May 16.
