A new theatrical release called THE BRUTALIST has received 10 Academy Award nominations and already boasts three Golden Globe Awards. But I found it to be an intense, uneven epic drama about a brilliant Jewish-Hungarian architect who survived the Holocaust and comes to this country in 1947. Sadly, his years long struggle to achieve success in this country comes at great personal cost. Adrien Brody is so good as the long suffering immigrant that I think he’ll get his second Academy Award. (The first was for THE PIANIST twenty years ago.) Parts of THE BRUTALIST are compelling, but other parts are disturbing and confusing. Plus, it’s too long: 3 hours and 35 minutes with a 15 minute intermission. Over a time span of 33 years the sprawling plot brings in many other characters, some of whom just disappear without explanation before the movie finally ends. Plus, there are scenes of heroin addiction, prostitution, and rape. THE BRUTALIST may be a critically acclaimed movie, but, in spite of its superb actors, for me, it was hard to sit through.
