Kristen Stewart has made her music recording debut in a feature on a song by beloved indie rock band Lord Huron, starring in a slick, noir-inspired music video to boot.
The band dropped “Who Laughs Last?” at midnight, its first single since 2023. This song is a significant departure from the folk-tinged indie rock sound the band is known for, shifting toward a post-punk sound. The track begins with Kristen Stewart monologuing over a tight drum beat and a muted electric guitar riff, narrating what seems to be a desperate getaway. “After three hours at the wheel I found myself beyond the borders of my experience,” she opens. “From there it was one alien world after another: ghost towns, painted deserts, hamburger stands, neon temples.”
The rest of her monologue similarly narrates an urgent late-night drive through the middle of nowhere, and the accompanying music video captures the imagery as well as the vibe. We see Stewart driving a car, lighting a cigarette, and taking a puff of an inhaler. She is apparently on the run, keeping her eyes “on the long white lines” of the road, as she says several times throughout the song. It’s easy to see why Lord Huron collaborated with Stewart on “Who Laughs Last?”: this could have easily been the theme song for Love Lies Bleeding, and the dark, neon music video could have taken place within the world of that film.
In a press release, Stewart shared that she’s “always loved the band and immediately sparked to the manic drift of the song and to the mood.”
“I love when a song is something you can kind of seep into and imagine,” she added. “There’s nothing like making new friends through projects like these that just crop up. Lucky stuff.”
For his part, Ben Schneider, the frontman of Lord Huron, said in a press release that while he and Stewart didn’t know each other previously, he “kept hearing her voice while I was writing this song.” Schneider reached out to her, “thinking it was a long shot.”
“But she said she was interested so we met up and hit it off talking about books, movies, and music,” he said. “She immediately got what I was going for and had great ideas to boot. She’s just a great person and so creative and open. She added a lot to the video concept as well. It was the kind of collaboration you dream of, honestly.” Oh, to be a fly on the wall of the coffee shop where Kristen Stewart and Lord Huron were brainstorming music video ideas.
