In theaters.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>During this lazy summer of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/30\/entertainment\/jurassic-world-rebirth-review-an-embarrassing-dino-retread\/\">comatose sequels<\/a>, nothing has been scarier to Hollywood than an original idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So how sweet it is that one of the freshest and best movies of sweaty season is a brand new, freakily creative story from the horror genre.<\/p>\n<p>No cardboard IP here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But plenty of RIP.<\/p>\n<p>The sharp and explosive \u201cWeapons,\u201d from \u201cBarbarian\u201d writer-director Zach Cregger, is powered by a quality the big screen has all but surrendered to more riveting TV dramas: Unpredictability.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Right from the spooky intro, in which we learn that 17 fifth graders from the same suburban classroom all mysteriously ran away from their homes at 2:17 a.m. one night and went missing, the plot unfolds in ways startling and twisty, disturbing and deceptive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The experience is akin to being blindfolded and thrown into a trunk \u2014 except fun!<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s main question: Where did all the kids go?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Julia Garner and Josh Brolin star in \u201cWeapons. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Could their disappearance be a coordinated kidnapping, an act of God or perhaps an alien abduction?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an intense problem to solve. One lost child in a film means high stakes, a ticking clock and big adult feelings. Multiply that by 17.<\/p>\n<p>Something feels off about the community from the start. There are hints of the rapturey HBO drama \u201cThe Leftovers,\u201d as well as the recent warped <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/11\/entertainment\/longlegs-review-nicolas-cages-horror-film-is-terrifying-and-fantastic\/\">\u201cLonglegs\u201d with Nicolas Cage<\/a> and the not-so-recent \u201cBlair Witch Project.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cregger adds a bit of \u201cIt\u201d and \u201cStranger Things,\u201d too, in the way the movie probes the dark crevices of a seemingly nice, sleepy town as young people confront pure evil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But who\u2019s to blame for the crime?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Seventeen kids in a single classroom mysteriously go missing. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The angry locals believe it\u2019s the teacher Justine (Julia Garner). They vandalize her car and stalk her. But the cops can\u2019t find any evidence to implicate the pithy, secretive woman.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just one little boy in the class didn\u2019t vanish \u2014 Alex (Cary Christopher, a 2025 Child of the Corn). He\u2019s gotta know something, right?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our final answer is peculiar and outlandish \u2014 frightening, oddly funny, eccentric, spine-tingling, grotesque and ultimately sad.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To arrive there, Cregger has built a puzzle that\u2019s told in chapters, each devoted to a different character.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One belongs to Josh Brolin as a dogged parent, and another goes to Austin Abrams\u2019 comedic Anthony, a burnout drug dealer who could be friends with someone named Silent Bob.\u00a0Alden Ehrenreich, a great actor who hasn\u2019t been around much lately, plays a troubled cop.<\/p>\n<p>And Amy Madigan does a delicate dance as Aunt Gladys.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cWeapons\u201d is told in chapters, each devoted to a different character. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Garner, who exudes an energy that suggests she might pick a fight with somebody at the grocery store, fuels that sinister Main Street, USA, vibe with her enigmatic \u201cOzark\u201d persona. The vicious actress is herself a weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the grown-ups here are deeply and engrossingly flawed: self-interested addicts, weirdos and brutes. In their own odd way, they each help the tale reach its satisfying conclusion, even if many of them don\u2019t make it to the credits.
