{"id":1945895,"date":"2025-08-07T09:04:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T09:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=1945895"},"modified":"2025-08-07T09:04:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T09:04:14","slug":"frost-school-summer-programs-expand-musical-boundaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/frost-school-summer-programs-expand-musical-boundaries\/","title":{"rendered":"Frost School summer programs expand musical boundaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>    <!-- Begin Displaying Medium Call to Action Buttons --><br \/>\n        <!-- End Medium Call to Action Buttons --><\/p>\n<p>The JAS Academy, the renowned summer jazz program run by the Frost School of Music and music presenter<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jazzaspensnowmass.org\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jazz Aspen Snowmass<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(JAS) in Aspen, Colorado, offers fantastic musical enrichment to its elite college-age students: full scholarships, performance opportunities, and the invaluable Frost School practice of teaching career as well as musical skills.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.miami.edu\/frost\/stories\/2024\/08\/jazz-aspen.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">JAS Academy<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>began offering another unique opportunity\u2014the study of Afro-Caribbean jazz. Led by Frost School professor Etienne Charles, a Guggenheim Fellowship-winning Trinidadian native acclaimed for his explorations of Caribbean and African diaspora music and American jazz, the Afro-Caribbean Big Band session immerses young musicians in a rich musical arena largely absent from traditional conservatory settings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was to create a greater understanding of Afro-Caribbean music and its place in the jazz idiom,\u201d said Charles. \u201cThere is a big void in not just jazz education, but modern music education, that leaves out the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a program that\u2019s not just geared to playing and improvising and composing, but to finding new avenues for your musical exploration so you can deepen the experience for your audience and your bandmates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JAS Academy program director<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.miami.edu\/profile\/0f651548114123de211caaac852f3341\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Bergeron<\/a>, a bassist and jazz studies professor at the Frost School, echoes Charles\u2019s assessment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe importance of studying [Afro-Caribbean] styles is equally as important as the study of swing and be-bop,\u201d Bergeron said. \u201cThese styles have had a significant impact on the evolution of jazz music.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JAS Academy Afro-Caribbean Big Band\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A4Z0m-i14XA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Bergeron\u2019s roots in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz that was also a nexus for Latin and Caribbean music, contribute to his understanding. \u201cEtienne Charles prefers &#8220;Afro-Caribbean\u201d because that term encompasses the music and culture of ALL Caribbean nations, and also the environment of New Orleans, where many of those cultures came together to form a unique new style of music,\u201d Bergeron said.<\/p>\n<p>Jazz Aspen CEO Jim Horowitz suggested adding a Latin jazz session to the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jazzaspensnowmass.org\/jas-ed\/jas-academy\/?_gl=1*pcbrv6*_up*MQ..*_ga*MzY4MzI3MzQ3LjE3NTQzMzMzMDA.*_ga_N80E8SGMDP*czE3NTQzMzMzMDAkbzEkZzEkdDE3NTQzMzMzMjIkajM4JGwwJGgxNjc1OTc2Njgw\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">JAS Academy<\/a>\u2019s regular Big Band session a couple of years ago. Bergeron, Dean Shelton G. Berg, and JAS Academy artistic director Christian McBride enthusiastically assented, and it kicked off last summer. The program runs from July 28 to August 11 and offers an intensive, immersive experience to 23 students from the Frost School and across the country. It includes hearing acclaimed artists like Cimafunk, an electrifying Cuban-funk act, and Jamaican jazz pioneer Monty Alexander\u2019s Harlem Kingston Express.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not just learning the notes on the page and the rhythms on the drum,\u201d said Charles. \u201cYou\u2019re also learning the history behind [the music], the migrations behind it, the food that goes with it, the dance that accompanies it, the energies that create it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><figcaption><span>JAS Academy students performing.\u00a0<\/span><em>Photo courtesy Jazz Aspen Snowmass.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Charles organized an opening night get-to-know-you dinner for students to showcase the traditional Caribbean merging of culture and food. Bergeron made Creole and Cajun dishes, fellow Frost School professor Reynaldo Sanchez made a Cuban dish, and another team member made Argentine empanadas. Bergeron said students bonded during the event, leading to a stellar first jam session a day and a half later.<\/p>\n<p>Bergeron said the JAS Academy Afro-Caribbean session is another example of the Frost School\u2019s innovative approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an expanding world of artists and stylistic influences, this is an extremely valuable educational platform,\u201d Bergeron said. \u201cPresenting this program as a featured part of the Jazz Aspen Academy is a great example of the Frost School\u2019s commitment to exploring the rich and diverse cultural history of America\u2019s indigenous music and respecting the contributions of all cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/festivalnapavalley.org\/education\/academy\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Frost School of Music at Festival Napa Valley<\/a>, in California\u2019s famous wine country, is a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.miami.edu\/frost\/stories\/2024\/07\/napa-valley.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">classical music counterpart<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to the JAS Academy that takes place in July.
