But when I watch <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@jkenjilopezalt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">J. Kenji L\u00f3pez-Alt\u2019s cooking videos<\/a>, I feel like, just maybe, I\u2019m not a complete failure in the kitchen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under his guidance in <em>The<\/em> <em>New York Times<\/em> cooking section, I\u2019ve learned, but not yet perfected, how to boil an egg (it\u2019s not as easy as it looks!), added this <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cooking.nytimes.com\/recipes\/1020543-mayo-marinated-chicken-with-chimichurri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mayo-marinated chicken<\/a> to my regular dinner rotation, and will one day attempt this <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cooking.nytimes.com\/recipes\/1021203-sichuan-chile-crisp-sundae-with-peanut-streusel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spicy-salty sundae<\/a>. His methods are methodical, but generally approachable, and he packs a lot of information into his presentations, allowing hopelessly mediocre cooks like myself to execute at least moderately edible dishes to family and friends.<\/p>\n<p>This month, fans can catch L\u00f3pez-Alt in person, alongside some of the best chefs in the business at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconrad.org\/events\/tasting-notes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tasting Notes<\/a> on August 14 at the Baker-Baum Concert Hall at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. The interactive event will feature chefs and classic musicians working in perfect harmony (sorry\u2014I couldn\u2019t resist). Along with L\u00f3pez-Alt, participating chefs include <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/claudetteazepeda\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Claudette Zepeda<\/a> (<em>Iron Chef<\/em>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/claudette-zepeda-new-restaurant-leu-leu-leucadia\/\">Leu Leu<\/a>), Sean Sherman (a.k.a. the Sioux Chef, a James Beard Award-winning chef, activist, and author) Kelly Van Arsdale (co-founder of Spinnaker Chocolate in Seattle), and a guest chef from Caf\u00e9 Coyote in Old Town.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tasting Notes, a live exploration of food and music\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YsSanb53OzE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Musicians include <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inonbarnatan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inon Barnatan<\/a> (The Conrad\u2019s music director) on piano, Tessa Lark (a Grammy-nominated artist) on violin, Masumi Rostad (a Grammy Award-winning musician and music educator) on viola, and Sterling Elliott (an award-winning artist and graduate of the acclaimed Juilliard School) on cello.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/san-diego-best-food-drink-2025\/\">best of the best<\/a>, people. And it\u2019s never been done before in San Diego. It\u2019s actually only been done twice since L\u00f3pez-Alt launched the series in Seattle last year, but after La Jolla, he hopes to bring it to more cities over the next year.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez-Alt grew up playing the violin, but when it came time to choose between a traditional college or a music conservatory, he ended up going the safe route. \u201cI was always sort of torn about that decision,\u201d he explains. But he kept up his friendships with many of his musical friends, many of whom are now world renowned. At one point, John Holloway, the executive director at Seattle Chamber Music Society, asked him if he was available to prepare a dinner for some donors.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Courtesy of Seattle Chamber Music Society<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018Well, instead of a private event for like, a few rich people, how about we put on a big live stage show where we really get to explore [and] meet the connections between music and food for a much broader audience?\u2019\u201d L\u00f3pez-Alt says. \u201cAnd that\u2019s really how it began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The multi-course, multi-sensory event explores parallels between classical chamber music and cooking, pairing pieces of music with a chef\u2019s demonstration carried out at the same time. \u201cThe idea is that a lot of folks who are into food might not have been to a classical music concert before, and the other way around,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s some sort of interactive elements in there as well\u2014we ask the audience to listen to things in different ways, or play things in major keys and minor keys, and gauge the reactions, things like that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tasting Notes will run around 90 minutes to two hours\u2014the length of a typical concert\u2014followed by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconrad.org\/events\/summer-night-bites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an afterparty<\/a> with bites from Caf\u00e9 Coyote, wine from Rancho Coyote, and ice cream from Killer Whale Creamery. It\u2019s good timing, too. Little Italy is in the midst of a rebirth, with a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/07\/10\/shuttered-little-italy-food-hall-poised-for-a-revival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">newly imagined food hall<\/a> in the works and a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/listening-bar-little-italy-kiku-room\/\">listening bar on the way<\/a>\u2014and if you ask me, more tacos is always a good thing. Plus, Tijuanazo has some of the best adobada in the city. Order two entr\u00e9es at George\u2019s and flash your SummerFest ticket to get a free dessert <em>and<\/em> free valet parking for the performance. It\u2019s a quick walk from George\u2019s to The Conrad, and a good way to stretch your legs before submitting to a night of glorious music from around the world.<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/chick-and-hawk-restaurant\/\">Chick &amp; Hawk<\/a> has yet to hatch (yes, still), but the long-awaited fried chicken joint isn\u2019t the only culinary concept that former pro skater Tony Hawk is putting his name behind. Novecientos Grados (Spanish for \u201c900 degrees,\u201d the nearly impossible trick that cemented Hawk\u2019s name in the history books) will open in the new Terminal 1 space at the San Diego International Airport later this fall as part of the $3.8 billion project with more gates, more restaurants, more shops, and yes, a lot more parking. With chef Claudette Zepeda (Leu Leu) behind the California-Mexico fusion menu, I\u2019d say the hottest new destination just might be the airport itself.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m all for the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/san-diego-food-scene-pop-up-restaurants\/\">pop-up phenomenon<\/a> of 2025, but there\u2019s something weirdly soothing to me about <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/10-must-try-food-trucks-in-san-diego\/\">food trucks<\/a>. There\u2019s a new one on the horizon\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/burekasbox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Burekas Box<\/a> calls itself San Diego\u2019s first zero-emissions food truck, specializing in kosher burekas (a popular pastry in Jewish culture made with puff pastry and filled with either sweet or savory ingredients). Savory burekas like cheese or potato come with traditional sides of hard-boiled eggs, pickles, olives, and tomato, and the current sweet summer flavor is strawberry ricotta (big yes from me).
