According to royal biographer Robert Hardman, Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> once attended a religious ceremony to calm concerns about a haunted room at Sandringham.<\/p>\n

The story was discussed on a recent episode of the Queens, Kings and Dastardly Things podcast, hosted by Hardman and historian Kate Williams. The episode focused on the royal family\u2019s history<\/a> with the supernatural.<\/p>\n

Hardman explained that the story came from the personal diaries of the late royal biographer Kenneth Rose. Rose wrote that in 2000, staff at the Sandringham estate were worried about unexplained events in the room where King George VI died in 1952. Disturbed by what they described as a strange atmosphere, they brought their concerns to the Queen Mother.<\/a><\/p>\n

According to Rose, the Queen Mother then asked a local parson to carry out a small religious ceremony to address the concerns. Queen Elizabeth II was invited to attend<\/a>, along with the Queen Mother\u2019s lady-in-waiting, Prue Penn.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a conventional exorcism,\u201d Hardman said. \u201cThere was no dramatic casting out of demons, like you see in films. It was said that the room contained a troubled spirit and that the parson was supposed to bless the space.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s unclear whether the Queen or Queen Mother believed there was a ghost in the room, and Hardman believes the Queen Mother likely arranged the service to show staff that their concerns were being taken seriously.<\/p>\n

Sandringham has had a long history of ghost stories. In Britain\u2019s Ghostly Heritage, author John West wrote about strange events at the estate, including lights flickering, footsteps with no source, and moving Christmas<\/a> cards.<\/p>\n

He also claimed that King Charles, while still young, had a frightening experience in the estate\u2019s library and ran out with a member of staff.<\/p>\n

In 1996, a worker named Shaun Croasdale also claimed to have seen the ghost of the Queen\u2019s former steward, Tony Jarred.<\/p>\n

Sandringham has been a royal home since Queen Victoria bought it in 1862. It is still used by the royal family today and is considered a private residence. The estate covers roughly 20,000 acres in Norfolk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
