James Gunn will write and direct \u201cthe next installment in the Super-Family,\u201d Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed during the company\u2019s earnings call.<\/p>\n
Gunn had previously said in various interviews during his \u201cSuperman\u201d press tour that he was writing a new movie featuring David Corenswet\u2019s Superman in it, although he always remained coy on whether it was a standalone \u201cSuperman\u201d sequel or something else. Zaslav provided no clarity there, opting to say \u201cnext movie in the Super-Family,\u201d but it\u2019s news that Gunn will direct the movie in addition to writing the screenplay. He served the same dual role on \u201cSuperman.\u201d<\/p>\n
More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Warner Bros. recently relaunched the DC Universe with Gunn\u2019s \u201cSuperman,\u201d which ignited to $125 million domestically in early July and has since generated $315 million in North America and $550 million globally.<\/p>\n Next up for the franchise is \u201cPeacemaker\u201d Season 2, followed by the \u201cSupergirl\u201d movie and the \u201cLanterns\u201d television series in 2026. Plus there\u2019s \u201cClayface,\u201d which is set to film this year. Gunn recently told\u00a0CBS Mornings<\/a>\u00a0that fans should expect each entry to have its own flavor and tone, just like actual comic books.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018Clayface\u2019 is a totally different thing. Although it\u2019s in the same universe, it\u2019s a complete horror film, and that\u2019s one of the things we want to do,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cThere\u2019s not a company style. It\u2019s not like every movie is gonna be like \u2018Superman.\u2019 The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it. \u2026 We don\u2019t want people being bored.\u201d<\/p>\n James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired in 2022 to reset the state of DC Studios, which has long struggled to keep up with Disney\u2019s wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. Beyond \u201cSuperman,\u201d portrayed in this world by David Corenswet, Gunn and Safran have outlined an ambitious, 10-year plan of interconnected sequels and spinoffs. Their efforts will continue with two blockbuster hopefuls in 2026, \u201cSupergirl\u201d and \u201cClayface,\u201d as well as a new take on \u201cWonder Woman.\u201d<\/p>\n Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has praised the team of Gunn and Safran for \u201cbreathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world.\u201d Although \u201cSuperman\u201d has been a start, DC still faces challenges because \u201cSupergirl\u201d and \u201cClayface\u201d are led by relatively unknown protagonists. That\u2019s compared to Superman, who had an advantage as one of the most recognizable heroes on the planet.
