Chris Appleton<\/strong> is opening up about a challenging time in his life.<\/p>\n

The celebrity hairstylist, 42, appeared on the Wednesday, August 6, episode of the On Purpose with Jay Shetty<\/a><\/em> podcast and recounted what it was like telling his two children, Billy<\/strong>, 22, and Kitty-blu<\/strong>, 20 \u2014 whom he shares with his ex-partner Kate Katon<\/strong> \u2014 that he was gay.<\/p>\n

Appleton explained that he was bullied growing up and didn\u2019t want his kids \u2014 who were 6 and 8 years old when he told them about his sexuality \u2014 to experience any teasing because of their father.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hardest part was telling my kids,\u201d Appleton \u2014 who has worked with Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez<\/strong> and Ariana Grande<\/strong> \u2014 admitted. \u201cMy job as a dad, I felt, was to protect my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just didn\u2019t want them to ever have that shame that was put on me onto them,\u201d he shared. \u201cIn a way, I felt like a disease. I felt like it was a cancer. I wanted to cut it out. \u201cLike, \u2018If I could just get rid of that, then I could just be a normal dad for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Appleton said his kids were \u201cupset\u201d and \u201cconfused\u201d when he came out to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of a sudden, I just felt like I just messed their life up,\u201d Appleton confessed. \u201cI felt like I\u2019d failed as a dad because my job was to protect them. And if anyone ever hurt them, I would protect them. But I was the one hurting them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Appleton revealed that he ended up trying to take his life because of the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like it would be better for them to have a dad that was dead, than a dad that was gay,\u201d he recounted.<\/p>\n

However, Appleton, who described the experience as a \u201cturning point\u201d in his life, woke up in the hospital and had a revelation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just remember thinking, \u2018What about if I just surrender?\u2019\u201d he recalled. \u201cWhat about if I\u2019m just gay and I just be that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Appleton married actor Lukas Gage<\/strong> in 2023, but he filed for divorce six months later.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
