The Tour., but opened stadium shows for the likes of Morgan Wallen, Kane Brown and Luke Bryan \u2014 Zimmerman says that though he was getting great feedback on the songs from those in his inner circle, something didn\u2019t feel quite right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe put up the tour and it sold out, and my team was like, \u2018You need to put out another record,&#8217;\u201d he recalls to <em>Billboard<\/em>. \u201cBut I was like, \u2018I\u2019m not really feeling this album. The songs are good, but it doesn\u2019t feel personal to me.\u2019 If I put it out, it\u2019s out there and I can\u2019t take it back. That\u2019s when I pulled the whole plug on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSo Zimmerman recalibrated, writing more songs and digging deeper, lyrically and musically, ultimately contributing seven of the 18 songs that appear on his new album, <em>Different Night, Same Rodeo<\/em>, out on Atlantic Records\/Warner Music Nashville on Friday (Aug. 8). But he also called upon many of Nashville\u2019s premier songwriters to craft songs, such as the jangly, fiddle-laced ode of self-sabotage \u201cComin\u2019 in Cold,\u201d the driving \u201cBackup Plan\u201d and the sterling album closer \u201cHappy Ever After Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m blessed because of songwriters,\u201d he says. \u201cOld-school days, everybody was so, \u2018I don\u2019t cut outside songs.\u2019 That ain\u2019t me. When I first started writing for my first album, I wasn\u2019t touring, I was only writing songs. When I started touring, it does get hectic and wild. I [told writers] \u2018I\u2019ll give you some ideas and things I want to talk about, and you go write songs. If you write a song I feel like I could have written myself or I connect to it, I\u2019ll cut that song.\u2019 They\u2019ll send me a verse-chorus, and I\u2019ll start messing with it on the bus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmong those songs Zimmerman co-wrote is the country-rock leaning \u201cChevy Silverado,\u201d which Zimmerman says he had been working on intermittently for about three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen I was 16, my Chevy Silverado was everything to me,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI was always driving that thing, going to parties, hanging out with girls. At first the lyric was about a red Chevy Silverado, then I changed it to white. I realized, \u2018Wait, this is a song about my life\u2019 \u2014 and I started changing all the lyrics [to more closely fit his story].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe eventually brought in co-writers Tucker Beathard, Ilsey Juber, Gavin Lucas and Heath Warren to help shape the song. \u201cThis is my story, from meeting girls to hanging out and getting my heart broken,\u201d he continues. \u201cNow, I still have the Chevy Silverado \u2014 but none of those girls, none of those loves. The surface meaning is that your Chevy will never leave you, but the girls will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe new album is scattered with collaborations, following \u201cAll the Way,\u201d his smash teamup with BigXthaPlug that reached No. 4 on the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/hot-100\">Billboard Hot 100<\/a> earlier this year. On his current hit single from the album, Zimmerman joins forces with Luke Combs on the steely-eyed ode to ambition and grit \u201cBackup Plan,\u201d which has reached the top 10 on the Country Airplay chart. \u201cLuke was one of those [collabroators] I was chasing,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen Zimmerman played at Combs\u2019s October benefit concert Concert For Carolina, which aided those in North Carolina impacted by massive flooding, the two artists found time to hang out prior to the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was a real connection \u2014 I was like, \u2018I really like this guy,&#8217;\u201d Zimmerman recalls. \u201cIt felt like he was treating me like he would treat anybody else. He gave me his number that night, and I was like, \u2018Should I text him? Should I be the crazy girl on the first date and text after the first date? Though it talks about, like, this girl has this guy she\u2019s not really into and she keeps coming back to me. It kinda insinuates cheating a little bit, but I didn\u2019t think of it like that, I just thought, \u2018It\u2019s so fun.\u2019 It kind of talks about some deep stuff, but it\u2019s meant to be light-hearted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Kid LAROI collab \u201cLost\u201d came after the two musicians spent the night on the town in Nashville after LAROI had played a private show in Music City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s like, \u2018I want to have dinner with Bailey,&#8217;\u201d Zimmerman recalls. \u201cI\u2019ve listened to his songs since like 2016 and had just started. We got to dinner and I was nervous \u2014 so [we] got there and he was the nicest guy ever. We get along [about] everything, and all of just what we believe in and life and our careers \u2014 it was like the Spiderman thing where I was pointing at myself. We had a wild night in Nashville, went out to Morgan\u2019s [Wallen\u2019s Nashville bar] \u2014 I took him to Loser\u2019s, and the next morning he pushed his flight back because he wanted to have breakfast. On the way there, he was like, \u2018Last night, you played me a song. Can you play that again?\u2019 and I had played him \u2018Lost.\u2019 He kept asking to hear it, so I asked him to get on the song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThough he\u2019s recently rolled out the collabs with BigXThaPlug, Combs and Diplo, Zimmerman says he\u2019s judicious when it comes to collaborating. \u201cMy main thing about collaborations is I really want to be friends, and it\u2019s not just this forced industry thing,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSome of Zimmerman\u2019s songs, such as \u201cReligiously\u201d and the new album\u2019s \u201cHoly Smokes,\u201d dabble in spiritual references \u2014 but he also delves deeper into emotionally raw moments of doubt and struggle, such as on \u201cHell or High Water.\u201d Zimmerman says the new project follows a personal time marked by worry, and reliance on unhealthy vices, but he\u2019s seen a personal spiritual renewal in his own life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cGod saved me from drinking and smoking all the time and all these little things that kept getting in my way,\u201d Zimmerman says. \u201cThe uncertainty and me worrying\u2026 I\u2019ve worried about this album, this tour. I\u2019ve been so nervous about everything, but when I pray about it, it\u2019s gone. [My faith] has just grown stronger over the past few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs both country music and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/christian-music-billboards-charts-surge-1235969363\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/christian-music-billboards-charts-surge-1235969363\/\">Christian music have skyrocketed <\/a>over the past year, Zimmerman says releasing his own album of faith-inspired music or a Contemporary Christian music collab wouldn\u2019t be out of the question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve had people ask me if I would do a Christian album, but God\u2019s calling me to do what I\u2019m doing right now and there\u2019s a reason for it,\u201d he offers. \u201c100% ,I\u2019d do a Christian collab. I\u2019ve thought about doing a Christian album \u2014 but my version of it, where it\u2019s Christian-country. I\u2019ve actually been talking to [Contemporary Christian music singer-songwriter] Brandon Lake about doing that, and I\u2019m such a big fan of his.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think it\u2019s the new age of Christian faith, because there\u2019s been so many people not doing it for the right reasons,\u201d he adds. \u201cI had this lady in catering one time. I had a sweatshirt on that said, \u2018Just Here to Give God Glory.\u2019 I said something like, \u2018This chicken looks good as s\u2014t\u2019 This lady went, \u2018If you\u2019re going to be a billboard, then maybe you should probably be a little better with your mouth. I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, so because I\u2019m not perfect, I can\u2019t spread the word of God?\u2019 That\u2019s the worst advice I\u2019ve heard in my life. The old-school way of learning about God and being a Christian is so outdated. No, you don\u2019t have to take your hat off to talk to God or show up in your Sunday best. I\u2019m so passionate about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut currently, he says his country songs of love, loss, growth and his small-town upbringing are right where he feels he needs to be, and he\u2019s excited to be playing his new music, and revealing his journey thus far, to fans on his current New to Country Tour each night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis music is crazy and I\u2019ve worked so hard on it,\u201d Zimmerman says. \u201cI\u2019m so glad I stuck to my guns on [the album]. I\u2019m so proud of it.
