Prince William and Princess Charlotte were in the stands cheering on the Lionesses<\/a> in Basel, Switzerland in their Euros final against Spain on Sunday. And as soon as they secured a dramatic victory in penalties, the royal family led the way in summing up the nation\u2019s pride. <\/p>\n

King Charles issued a personal statement of congratulations, saying the Lionesses \u201chave my whole family\u2019s warmest appreciation and admiration.\u201d \u201cFor more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant \u2018football\u2019s coming home\u2019,\u201d the King wrote. \u201cAs you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true. For this, you have my whole family\u2019s warmest appreciation and admiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The King said the Lionesses had demonstrated that there can be \u201cno setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms.\u201d He ended the message, signed Charles R, encouraging the team to bring home the World Cup in 2027. <\/p>\n

Prince William issued a short personal message made more special by the fact that it was written jointly with 10-year-old Princess Charlotte. Charlotte\u2019s initial has been on family messages before for birthdays and father\u2019s day, but this is the first time her name has been on any public message relating to the royal family\u2019s official role. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a game! Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe and we couldn\u2019t be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment England. W & Charlotte,\u201d the message read. The Palace\u2019s social media account also posted pictures of Charlotte at the match and William greeting the players after the game. <\/p>\n

Other royals with personal social media accounts who also joined in congratulating the team were Princess Eugenie and her mother Sarah Ferguson. \u201cCome on Lionesses\u2026you absolute LEGANDS,\u201d (sic) Eugenie posted on Instagram stories. Sarah Ferguson wrote, \u201cWow! A HUGE congratulations to our Lionesses. You are incredible!\u201d<\/p>\n
