You don\u2019t want to ruin the legacy, you want add to it,\u201d Hollander said. \u201cI was like, \u2018I cannot be responsible for ruining a beloved film and adding to a cash grab, schlock pile that would be once direct to DVD.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Weiss, who boarded the legacy sequel in 2024 when her \u201cDollface\u201d collaborator Nisha Ganatra <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/03\/freaky-friday-2-nisha-ganatra-in-talks-to-direct-curtis-lohan-negotiating-1235872022\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:joined;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">joined<\/a> as director, credited the shared love for the 2003 \u201cFreaky Friday\u201d among both creatives and executives alike. \u201cI remember seeing \u2018Freaky Friday\u2019 in theaters with my mom when I was 10 years old,\u201d Weiss said. \u201cI feel like I was the center of the target audience. I was a huge Lindsay Lohan fan. It was absolutely one of my favorite movies. So when when Disney called with the opportunity to come in and work on it, it was an easy, excited <em>yes<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to Weiss, there were certain \u201cnon-negotiables\u201d for \u201cFreakier Friday\u201d that Disney spearheaded, such as the inclusion of rock band Pink Slip and the core cast back in lead roles. Kristin Burr and Andrew Gunn, both producers on the 2003 film, also returned for the sequel. Weiss further credited Disney SVP of development Alison Erman for being integral to maintaining the \u201cFreaky Friday\u201d legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt was a combination of legacy producers and millennial executives and a millennial screenwriter, who were all like, \u2018We either love this movie because we worked on it\u2019 or \u2018We were children when it came out and are obsessed with every part of it,&#8217;\u201d Weiss said. \u201cI think [Alison] being of this generation and having that close tie made her such an asset as a studio executive working on this.\u201d (For all other millennials, Erman is also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/princess-diaries-3-crowns-director-193000254.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:working on \u201cPrincess Diaries 3.\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">working on \u201cPrincess Diaries 3.\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The financial return of releasing \u201cFreakier Friday\u201d theatrically remains to be seen, but as Gen-Zers would say, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/time-millennials-lindsay-lohan-movie-190000066.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:millennial women are already seated;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">millennial women are already seated<\/a>. That buying power of thirtysomething women has yet to be fully realized (or at least embraced) by Hollywood, as Weiss explained. Having a female-oriented, nostalgia-driven film in theaters has historically paid off, especially in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/barbie-wins-cinematic-box-office-030345579.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:We saw it with \u2018Barbie,\u2019;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">We saw it with \u2018Barbie,\u2019<\/a> we saw it with \u2018Wicked.\u2019 I think having that in the same way, with how every summer there is a really exciting MCU or DC release, would make sense with these big, female-driven franchises,\u201d Weiss said. \u201cThey are finally being given their day in theaters in that big summer blockbuster way. We\u2019ve done \u2018Transformers,\u2019 we\u2019ve done \u2018GI Joe,\u2019 we\u2019ve done \u2018Sonic\u2019 and all the comic book movies. So now, what does that gaze look like for us [women]?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It was actually actress\/producer Curtis who had the honor of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/jamie-lee-curtis-says-leaked-230000344.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:announcing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">announcing<\/a> to fans everywhere that \u201cFreakier Friday\u201d would (thankfully) be in theaters. The Academy Award winner wrote in 2024 teasing the release, \u201cYes, you heard me\u2026The theaters. The place we all go and enjoy a shared experience in the dark while munching popcorn and candy and laughing together and sometimes crying together. Until then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">And as for the criticisms that \u201ceverything is a remake\u201d nowadays, let\u2019s be real: That\u2019s not new, either. \u201cFreaky Friday\u201d\u00a0itself was first a 1976 film based on the book\u00a0by Mary Rodgers. It later became a 1995 TV movie before being once again adapted into the 2003 film that now spurred the sequel \u201cFreakier Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, the \u201cTransformers\u201d-esque franchises aren\u2019t complained about online the same way, if at all. \u201cIf people want to judge female franchises with a harder lens, that\u2019s nothing new either,\u201d Hollander said. \u201cAs women, we\u2019re always held to a higher standard, so we\u2019ll rise to the occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It works so well with Weiss\u2019 \u201cFreakier Friday\u201d that a third film could even be on the horizon. \u201cAny version of a movie that has complicated female dynamics in a fun, silly joyous way that also has magical realism devices, I\u2019m like, \u2018Sign me up.\u2019 So if that means \u2018Freakiest Friday,\u2019 yeah, OK,\u201d Weiss said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prepare for more possible flack from online trolls, though. Yet Weiss is unfazed. \u201cThe thing that is funny to me is that there\u2019s a lot of conversation now of like, \u2018Oh my God, everything\u2019s a reboot, everything\u2019s a sequel. I miss the \u201990s and early 2000s when everything was original,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018Those were also all remakes,&#8217;\u201d she said. \u201cThere are probably so many movies that people don\u2019t realize were actually movies from the \u201930s or \u201940s. I\u2019m like, \u2018Hollywood\u2019s built on it.\u2019 Maybe we\u2019re always re-innovating, but I have embraced it. I think that all of these stories are original, and you still are creating something new.
