As \u201cMadame Web\u201d star Sydney Sweeney remains mum on allegations of promoting eugenics via her American Eagle advertisement, she has seemingly stirred up even more support from far-right figures after recently gaining the favor of President Trump. <\/p>\n
A black-and-yellow banner covering a billboard on the 91 Freeway in Corona boldly states: \u201cProud Boys Love Sydney Sweeney,\u201d according to a photo that one Corona resident shared with ABC7.<\/a> <\/p>\n The banner, which uses the neo-fascist group<\/a>\u2018s signature colors, also references the hot-button American Eagle ad<\/a>. \u201cShe has the best blue genes,\u201d the banner says. Note \u201cgenes,\u201d not \u201cjeans.\u201d It\u2019s worth remembering that President Trump during a 2020 presidential debate ordered the Proud Boys to \u201cstand back and stand by\u201d<\/a> when pressed about condemning right-wing violent extremists. <\/p>\n It\u2019s unclear who put up the banner bearing the far-right group\u2019s name, according to ABC7. <\/p>\n A representative for Sweeney did not immediately respond to The Times\u2019 request for comment on Friday. <\/p>\n Earlier this month, jeans retailer American Eagle dropped a string of commercials for its latest campaign featuring the \u201cEuphoria\u201d star. In one advertisement, the Emmy-nominated actor who is blond says, \u201cGenes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n Posters<\/a> for the American Eagle campaign also featured the totally innovative, never-before-seen wordplay on \u201cjeans\u201d and genes.\u201d A slogan reads, \u201cSydney Sweeney has great genes,\u201d with the final word crossed out and replaced with \u201cjeans.\u201d<\/p>\n Sweeney, who seems to have a penchant for odd marketing opportunities<\/a>, and the ads quickly faced criticism on social media, with users alleging the campaign leaned into the language of eugenics. Eugenics is a discredited practice that essentially touted the idea of improving the human race through selective breeding. It gained traction in the early 20th century and was used as a justification for Hitler\u2019s Nazi Germany to wipe out millions of Jewish people, and U.S. authorities to forcibly sterilize more than 60,000 people in California and more than 30 other states.<\/p>\n In an attempt to quell the ire, American Eagle posted a statement<\/a> stating that its campaign \u201cis and always was about the jeans.\u201d <\/p>\n Sweeney and the American Eagle campaign notably found support among the conservative crowd \u2014 it wasn\u2019t the first time<\/a> for the 27-year-old \u201cImmaculate\u201d actor. Days after the ad dropped, public records revealing her most recent voter registration<\/a> history resurfaced, unveiling she registered as a Republican in June 2024. Trump found that irresistible to post about on his Truth Social platform.<\/p>\n \u201cSydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the \u2018HOTTEST\u2019 ad out there. It\u2019s for American Eagle, and the jeans are \u2018flying off the shelves.\u2019 Go get \u2018em Sydney!\u201d he posted Monday. In an earlier version of his post, Trump misspelled the actor\u2019s name as \u201cSidney Sweeney.\u201d<\/p>\n He also used the post to diss brands he claimed used \u201cwoke\u201d marketing, including Jaguar and Bud Light. Trump also couldn\u2019t resist throwing shade at pop star Taylor Swift, who openly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a> during the 2024 presidential election. <\/p>\n Amid the fashion fracas and social media discourse, it seems neither Sweeney nor American Eagle had anything to lose. <\/p>\n Sweeney shrugged off her latest bout of controversy last week as she was spotted doing karaoke with some \u201cEuphoria\u201d co-stars in Santa Monica. <\/a>She also hit the red carpet on Monday to promote her latest film, \u201cAmericana,\u201d from writer-director Tony Tost. <\/p>\n American Eagle, on the other hand, saw its stock surge<\/a> this week. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
