Jean Smart was hospitalized last month after taking a nasty fall in New York City while trying to flag down a taxi.<\/p>\n
The Emmy-winning<\/a> \u201cHacks\u201d star, who is currently in NYC for her 12-week run of \u201cCall Me Izzy,\u201d<\/a> opened up about the bizarre incident on Thursday\u2019s episode of \u201cLate Night with Seth Meyers.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cFourth of July, I went to Macy\u2019s to buy myself a cute little Fourth of July outfit to wear to the fireworks. And I was outside and I was trying to hail a cab, and I saw one. I went, \u2018Oh,\u2019 and I tripped over something,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Smart then dejectedly revealed that she broke her kneecap in half. \u201cOn the eighth of July, they screwed it back together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Meyers asked Smart if she experienced significant pain after hitting the ground, but she appeared more concerned about paparazzi catching her.<\/p>\n \u201cAs I was laying there, I was thinking, \u2018Oh God, don\u2019t! Please don\u2019t take a picture, anybody please,\u2019\u201d the 73-year-old said. She continued to recap the incident, noting that she was with her sons when this happened. <\/p>\n \u201cBut as I\u2019m sitting on the street waiting for the ambulance, a guy tripped over the same thing,\u201d Smart continued.<\/p>\n Although Jean didn\u2019t name the object that caused her fall, she learned that she wasn\u2019t the first person to be sent to the hospital for it. <\/p>\n \u201dAnd when I went to the emergency hospital, I mentioned it to the nurse. She said, \u2018Well, what did you trip over?\u2019 And I told her. I kind of described what it was. And she said, \u2018Oh, I know exactly what you\u2019re talking about because we get one a day.\u2019”<\/p>\n Smart said her older son, Connor, wrote a complaint to the city about this hazardous part of the road and \u201cthey immediately went out and fixed it.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, this injury forced Smart to take a break from her one-woman show. Fortunately, since most of the show involved sitting, she was able to get back to work sooner than later, though wearing a leg brace. Smart said she \u201ccouldn\u2019t move\u201d with the brace and the crew had to transport her to a chair on stage and then prop her leg up.<\/p>\n In \u201cCall Me Izzy\u201d Smart plays a writer in an abusive relationship who finds herself after turning to poetry.
