Sam Nivola<\/a> says Hollywood\u2019s embrace of plastic surgery has led to a dearth of opportunities for up-and-coming actors of his generation. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n The \u201cWhite Lotus\u201d actor made the eyebrow-raising claim in a new interview with Variety<\/a> published Thursday. In it, he expressed his admiration for Tom Cruise<\/a> while suggesting that cosmetic procedures have made it more challenging for younger actors to ever reach Cruise\u2019s stature in the current entertainment landscape. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThe old movie stars are getting plastic surgery, and they\u2019re looking younger and they\u2019re staying young. You have these really old people playing young roles,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not giving any space for the young\u2019uns to move in and make a name for themselves. With all due respect to those people, one day they won\u2019t be here anymore, literally, and they will have to create new stars.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n When asked to name a contemporary actor whose work he admired, Nivola pointed to Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a>, who he described as \u201cone of the best actors alive\u201d and a \u201ctotal star.\u201d Still, he clarified that he viewed Chalamet as \u201ca different kind of movie star,\u201d partly because he\u2019s \u201cnot huge and jacked.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Nivola, 21, rose to prominence on the third season of \u201cThe White Lotus<\/a>,\u201d in which he portrayed Lochlan Ratliff. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n His role on the smash HBO series, he said, has resulted in numerous offers to play similar characters or, as he put it, \u201csocially awkward, virginal kids who are a little weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI\u2019m starting to feel a little boxed in by the characters I\u2019ve played in my career,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I\u2019m also finally getting offers to do things where I\u2019m a little more grown up. Hopefully the next one will be something a little different.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Though Nivola is hardly the first celebrity to speak out against<\/a> cosmetic surgery, his remarks drew a heated response on social media, with some suggesting his stance was indicative of the ageist mentality that may be driving actors to seek out such procedures in the first place. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThose people will not be there one day, true.
