Eddie Murphy is defending his 2007 comedy Norbit<\/em><\/a>, 18 years later.<\/p>\n The actor-comedian was the top contender for the best supporting actor Oscar following his 2006 performance in Dreamgirls<\/em>, though it\u2019s been long believed that he lost out on the award after Norbit<\/em> released in 2007. Norbit<\/em> came out right after I got that Oscar nomination,\u201d he told Complex<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThere were articles like, \u2018How can he get an Oscar, he did this?\u2019 They\u2019re two different movies.\u201d<\/p>\n The Beverly Hills Cop<\/em><\/a> lead stood ten toes down for the film, which he notably wrote alongside his brother, Charlie Murphy. He continued, \u201cI wrote Norbit<\/em> with my brother, Charlie, and we think Norbit<\/em> is funny. Here\u2019s the thing with Norbit<\/em> \u2014 it came out and they gave me Razzie Awards<\/a> for worst actress, worst actor and worst actor of the decade. And I was like, \u2018Come on now, shit ain\u2019t that bad.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n The 79th Academy Awards took place in February 2007, and Murphy was nominated for supporting actor alongside Alan Arkin<\/a> (Little Miss Sunshine<\/em>), Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children<\/em>), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond<\/em>) and Mark Wahlberg (The Departed<\/em>). Arkin took home the coveted title.<\/p>\n Dreamgirls<\/em> is an adaptation of the 1981 Tony-winning Broadway musical of the same name. The film spotlighted the musical trio the Dreamettes, who were loosely inspired by The Supremes. Murphy played James (Jimmy) \u201cThunder\u201d Early in the movie.<\/p>\n \u201cI like Norbit<\/em>,\u201d Murphy added. \u201cTo this day, I like Norbit<\/em>. There\u2019s stuff in Norbit<\/em> that makes me laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n While the Shrek<\/em><\/a> star didn\u2019t end up earning an Oscar for Dreamgirls<\/em>, his co-star Jennifer Hudson<\/a> did.
