Emma Thompson<\/a> says she once got asked out by President Donald Trump<\/a>. She said she\u2019d get back to him, but never did.<\/p>\n The Oscar-winning British actress spoke about the experience on Friday, Aug 9. at the Locarno Film Festival.<\/p>\n Sharing the anecdote with a crowd in Locarno, Switzerland, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, Thompson explained that she was filming the 1998 movie \u201cPrimary Colors\u201d when he reached out to her. \u201cI was in my trailer one day while we were making that movie, and the phone rang, and it was Donald Trump,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know the number of the phone. No one had rung me on it before, and I said, \u2018Hello.\u2019 \u2018Hi, this is Donald Trump here,\u2019 and I thought it was a joke. And then I said, \u2018How can I help you?,\u2019 thinking maybe he needed directions.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump responded: \u201cI\u2019d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.\u201d <\/p>\n Thompson said she told the future president: \u201cWell, that\u2019s very sweet. Thank you so much. I\u2019ll get back to you.\u201d <\/p>\n However, then she made a jarring realization about the timing of Trump\u2019s call. \u201cAnd then I realized that on that day, my divorce, my divorce decree, you know, the final papers of my divorce had come through,\u201d Thompson recalled. <\/p>\n \u201cAnd I thought I bet [Trump\u2019s] got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm, you know, a nice divorcee. That\u2019s what he was looking for, and he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that\u2019s stalking!\u201d<\/p>\n Thompson never got back to \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d alum, but reflected on what could\u2019ve happened had she said yes.<\/p>\n \u201cBut I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n At the time, Thompson\u2019s divorce to British actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh had just been finalized. The pair married in 1989 and separated in 1995.<\/p>\n Thompson, 66, married her current husband Greg Wise in 2003. They met while filming the 1995 movie \u201cSense and Sensibility\u201d together.
