But since COVID Stern\u2019s become \u201ca hermit,\u201d the second staffer said.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone knows he hasn\u2019t been the same since COVID. He does the show from his [Southampton] basement. And it\u2019s been sad to see how irrelevant he\u2019s become,\u201d the employee added.<\/p>\n
Stern has also suffered immense loss in recent years, with the deaths of his father, Ben, in 2022, his best friend and stylist, Ralph Cirella, in 2023, and then his agent, Don Buchwald, in 2024.<\/p>\n
Fans have complained for years about the show\u2019s dwindling quality, and Stern\u2019s kids-gloves approach with certain guests he once would\u2019ve skewered.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis passion hasn\u2019t been there, and that can be infectious,\u201d the first staffer said. \u201cWhen your boss doesn\u2019t even seem like he wants to be there, its like, why should I bust my ass?\u201d<\/p>\n
