The \u201ctrust me\u201d trope has proven to be so successful, it\u2019s no wonder they\u2019re fueling the box office and streaming charts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI need you to trust me one last time,\u201d Tom Cruise\u2019s stubbornly capable secret agent character says in <em>Mission: Impossible \u2014 The Final Reckoning<\/em>. We like seeing this sort of thing played out onscreen over and over again because it\u2019s one of our most basic desires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAs much as men and women claim to love independence in most aspects of their lives, there&#8217;s a sense of relief and assuredness in letting someone else solve problems and overcome challenges,\u201d he says. \u201cAs a member of the audience, it&#8217;s even more appealing because it makes you feel [that] all because of one person or group, everything ultimately will be OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"belly-fat-and-bad-knees-be-damed\">\u2018Belly fat and bad knees be damed\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The fact that the fictional heroes we\u2019re often comforted by are tough, experienced men appeals greatly to other people like them. Adults over 45 are the demographic least likely to go to the movies, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/movies\/article\/could-gen-z-save-moviegoing-120055862.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to a Yahoo News\/YouGov Survey conducted in May 2025;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">according to a Yahoo News\/YouGov Survey conducted in May 2025<\/a>, so it makes sense that studios may craft narratives and cast actors specifically to break into that market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFor older men, [a \u201ctrust me\u201d story] offers the promise that they, too, could pull it all together to save themselves or their families or the world if push came to shove, belly fat and bad knees be damned,\u201d Tim Stevens, a writer at Connecticut College, tells Yahoo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Younger demographics may see a bit of their own dads in those characters. Though Cruise\u2019s character isn\u2019t a father, he has a fatherly relationship with several of his younger teammates, leading and protecting them even at his own expense. Christopher McKittrick, the former editor of Creative Screenwriting magazine, tells Yahoo that &#8220;grizzled old gunslinger&#8221; stories have been popular since classic Western films first took off. It may happen all the time in the movies now, but that\u2019s not typically the case in sports or other real-life, action-packed scenarios. In <em>F1: The Movie, <\/em>Brad Pitt plays a talented but rough-around-the-edges driver who returns to Formula 1 racing years after a horrific crash, only to use strategic aggressive driving and crashing to help his team defeat the competition. He defies the expectations of his younger teammate, but instead of shoving it in his face, he teaches the rising star a thing or two. Dads love this, but so do audiences at large: <em>F1: The Movie <\/em>has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/f1-brad-pitt-biggest-movie-044932963.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:made more than $500 million;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">made more than $500 million<\/a> at the global box office, becoming both Pitt and production company Apple\u2019s biggest blockbuster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To Stevens, \u201ctrust me\u201d movies all share a similar goal: to fulfill \u201cthe promise that it is never too late for you to make a difference, [that] your heroes are still the people they were when you first looked up to them and [that] there are people out there in the world motivated by more than greed, arrogance and cynicism.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"i-need-a-hero\">I need a hero<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Though the sheen of pure masculinity is what may initially draw people into these action movies and comedies, there\u2019s an inherent vulnerability in these stories. Returning to the careers they\u2019ve left, even if the goal is to save the day, requires vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The way this subverts our expectations and reverses typical power dynamics \u201cmakes a self-reliant hero irresistibly human and relatable,\u201d Ali Shehata, a physician and founder of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/famcinema.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:production company FamCinema;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">production company FamCinema<\/a>, tells Yahoo.
