The latest music from Hong Kong singer Nancy Kwai sees quiet emotions unfold like a flower\u2019s petals.<\/p>\n

Blooms are a main theme in Kwai\u2019s second EP, Blossoming<\/em>. They are used to highlight the cycle of love from joy to heartbreak and how it arrives and departs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to use the language of flowers to express messages I\u2019ve always wanted to say,\u201d Kwai said.<\/p>\n

The EP\u2019s final track, \u201cThe Last Letter\u201d, is special to Kwai because it is the first time she wrote her own lyrics.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like something truly mine. I didn\u2019t use difficult or fancy language. I just wanted it to be honest. Writing it was like recording my feelings as they were,\u201d the 25-year-old said. \u201cNormally, I wouldn\u2019t say these things out loud, not even to myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The song tells the story of realising that someone you care for is in love with another person and coming to terms with letting go.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegrets like that are hard to say face-to-face,\u201d Kwai said. \u201cSo I wrote them into the song. Maybe it\u2019s my way of … making sense of how I feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Writing about love<\/h3>\n

The album\u2019s opening track, \u201cCardigan\u201d, is about an old friend \u2013 someone you might never meet again.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it was a kindergarten friend I lost touch with. That friend mattered a lot to me, and the memories we shared were happy ones,\u201d Kwai said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople come and go. How we remember them \u2013 or whether we remember them at all \u2013 is up to us. Maybe this song can gently remind listeners: \u2018Hey, remember that person from before?\u2019 Maybe it\u2019ll even inspire them to reconnect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kwai\u2019s music is driven by emotional connection: \u201cI hope my songs can give them a sense of comfort \u2026 somewhere they feel understood or safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

A work in progress<\/h3>\n

As a young Hong Kong artist, Kwai said her biggest challenge is staying true to her local roots while trying to reach a global audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cCantopop has always had a strong foundation and a loyal audience,\u201d she noted. \u201cBut younger generations today are listening to so much more from the West, Japan [and] Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of her goals is to write more in Cantonese: \u201cCompared to Mandarin, which often leans toward more direct expression, Cantonese has a kind of elegance that I find beautiful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
