Justice for movie stars. We are just a few months shy of when Noah Baumbach\u2019s ode to a fictional movie star is released, with one of our starriest film stars at its center playing said fictional movie star \u2014 George Clooney \u2014 and plenty more playing less famous characters. \u201cJay Kelly\u201d will present a modern day Cary Grant<\/a> (who is even referenced in the teaser trailer<\/a>) as he struggles to juggle his life as a mega famous actor. As the teaser previews, Jay Kelly is accused of just playing himself \u2014\u00a0a criticism that has been levied, too, on Clooney, as well as the Netflix movie\u2019s co-star Adam Sandler<\/a>. And Clooney said he doesn\u2019t \u201cgive a shit\u201d if people do think that.<\/p>\n \u201cHave you ever tried playing yourself? It\u2019s hard to do,\u201d Clooney told Vanity Fair<\/a>, co-opting a line from \u201cJay Kelly.\u201d<\/p>\n More from IndieWire<\/strong><\/p>\n The \u201cOcean\u2019s Eleven\u201d star pointed out that, \u201cThere aren\u2019t that many guys in my age group that are allowed to do both broad comedies like\u00a0\u2018O Brother\u00a0[Where Art Thou?]\u2019\u00a0and then do\u00a0\u2018Michael Clayton\u2019\u00a0or\u00a0\u2018Syriana.\u2019 So if that means I\u2019m playing myself all the time, I don\u2019t give a shit.\u201d<\/p>\n Clooney also defended Sandler, who he called a \u201cbeautiful, heartfelt, soulful actor.\u201d \u201cI kept telling the cast, \u2018Don\u2019t call him\u00a0\u2018Sand Man.\u2019 Don\u2019t talk to him like he\u2019s just some goofy comedian. He\u2019s actually a really beautiful, wonderful actor\u2026 Because of what his paycheck is, which is doing big goofy comedies, when he does these other, beautiful,\u00a0\u2018Uncut Gems\u2019\u00a0kinds of movies, it reminds people of that. He\u2019s not just a good comedian.\u201d<\/p>\n In the movie, Sandler is Jay Kelly\u2019s manager Ron. Explaining his role to Vanity Fair, Sandler said, \u201cMy character loves George\u2019s character so much, and I thought that would be fun to do and easy to do with George. And as a guy who\u2019s an actor who\u2019d live a similar life to Jay Kelly, it\u2019s a crazy depiction \u2014 how accurate a lot of it is.\u201d<\/p>\n The film showcases Jay and Ron going on an \u201cunexpectedly profound journey through Europe,\u201d or so Netflix\u2019s official synopsis reads<\/a>. This seems to be a journey full of big names. The movie, co-written by Baumbach with actress Emily Mortimer, also features Mortimer with\u2026 big breath\u2026 Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Jim Broadbent, Patrick Wilson, Eve Hewson, Greta Gerwid, Alba Rohurwacher, Josh Hamilton, Lenny Henry, Nic\u00f4le Lecky, Thedda Graham, and Isla Fisher. Phew.<\/p>\n To compare Jay Kelly to Cary Grant is astute, considering that the legendary Old Hollywood actor \u2014\u00a0who spent the better part of three decades as a top box office star and continued to be a well-known personality through retirement \u2014\u00a0was on the record<\/a> saying, \u201cEveryone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant. I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be until finally I became that person. Or he became me. Or we met at some point.\u201d<\/p>\n Grant\u2019s persona ended up being, like Clooney\u2019s, versatile across a wide variety of genres, from action flicks like \u201cNorth by Northwest\u201d and screwball comedies like \u201cBringing Up Baby,\u201d to epics like \u201cThe Pride and the Passion\u201d and heartfelt dramas like \u201cNone but the Lonely Heart.\u201d Clooney, similarly, has stretched his charm across every type of film and has even bridged into the theater.
