Simon Pegg is shedding some light on what Quentin Tarantino\u2019s unmade \u201cStar Trek\u201d movie might have looked like.<\/p>\n
During a panel at Fan Expo Boston on Saturday (via Collider<\/a>), Pegg, who starred as Scotty in the rebooted \u201cStar Trek\u201d trilogy, said he got a breakdown of the film from J.J. Abrams and producer Lindsey Weber, and that it was just as wild as any of Tarantino\u2019s previous works.<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThat was what we call in the business batshit crazy,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was everything you would expect a Quentin Tarantino \u2018Star Trek\u2019 script to be.\u201d<\/p>\n Pegg explained he would\u2019ve enjoyed seeing the world of \u201cStar Trek\u201d through the eyes of the \u201cPulp Fiction\u201d director, but diehard fans of the franchise might have felt differently.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it would have been such an incredible sort of curio to see \u2018Star Trek\u2019 through his lens,\u201d Pegg added. \u201cI don\u2019t know how it would have gone over with the fans, but it certainly would have been an interesting thing.\u201d<\/p>\n In late 2017, it was announced that Paramount and \u201cStar Trek\u201d producer Abrams had accepted Tarantino\u2019s pitch for a new film in the franchise, and that \u201cThe Revenant\u201d screenwriter Mark L. Smith would work on the script. However, the movie was ultimately never made.<\/p>\n Smith told Collider in 2023 that a major hang-up on the film\u2019s production was that Tarantino was worried \u201cStar Trek\u201d would be his last movie.<\/p>\n \u201cQuentin and I went back and forth, he was gonna do some stuff on it, and then he started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of films,\u201d Smith said<\/a>. \u201cI remember we were talking, and he goes, \u2018If I can just wrap my head around the idea that \u2018Star Trek\u2019 could be my last movie, the last thing I ever do. Is this how I want to end it?\u2019 And I think that was the bump he could never get across, so the script is still sitting there on his desk.\u201d<\/p>\n The film would mostly take place on an Earth-like planet in a 1930s gangster setting<\/a>, seemingly taking inspiration from the 17th episode of the second season of \u201cStar Trek: The Original Series\u201d titled \u201cA Piece of the Action.\u201d In the episode, which originally aired in 1968, the Enterprise crew lands on a planet with a 1920s gangster culture.<\/p>\n Best of Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Sign up for Variety’s Newsletter<\/a>.
