Today, there\u2019s a new investment craze: a soccer (or football, if you\u2019re outside the U.S.) club and a complementary TV series.<\/p>\n<p>Eva Longoria has both. \u201cNecaxa,\u201d which debuts Thursday on FX, follows the namesake Mexican club, in which Longoria has a stake, as it strives to inch up Mexico\u2019s top league and make the coveted playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>It charts Longoria\u2019s post-investment role as she becomes \u201cLa Patrona\u201d (The Boss), as the players on the team call her. Yet soccer is a notoriously hard business, and one now saturated with celebrities who are using their investment to spawn accompanying entertainment. But Longoria said \u201cNecaxa\u201d (pronounced \u201cNecaha\u201d) has a standout story, and a potentially large audience in the U.S. Latino market.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the success of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thewrap.com\/tag\/welcome-to-wrexham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cWelcome to Wrexham,\u201d<\/a> the TV series as an ancillary product to soccer investment is now almost a requirement, with Tom Brady\u2019s \u201cBuilt in Birmingham: Brady &amp; the Blues\u201d additionally streaming on Amazon\u2019s Prime Video this month. The trend illustrates the closer ties that are being forged between the sports and entertainment worlds, with content being produced that blurs the line. These shows place viewers inside the action, which people want with sports. Longoria\u2019s stake was undisclosed, but <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/biz\/news\/ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-club-necaxa-eva-longoria-wrexham-1235985035\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one report claims<\/a> the club was valued in the \u201clow nine figures\u201d at the time;<strong> <\/strong>by 2022, the club had an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/biz\/news\/ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-club-necaxa-eva-longoria-wrexham-1235985035\/\">estimated valuation<\/a> of more than $200 million. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/events\/7344382773362655232\/about\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thewrap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Creator-Power-970x250-1.png?resize=970%2C250&amp;quality=80&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7804557\" style=\"object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thewrap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Creator-Power-970x250-1.png?w=970&amp;quality=80&amp;ssl=1 970w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thewrap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Creator-Power-970x250-1.png?resize=300%2C77&amp;quality=80&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thewrap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Creator-Power-970x250-1.png?resize=768%2C198&amp;quality=80&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She had previously invested with the group in the L.A.-based women\u2019s team, Angel City F.C., but this was her first foray into Mexico\u2019s Liga MX. \u201cI was blown away by how big of an imprint the league has,\u201d Longoria told TheWrap. \u201cIt is one of the most dynamic, passionate leagues in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-following-the-wrexham-model\">Following the \u201cWrexham\u201d model<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cNecaxa\u201d is a spiritual successor to Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac\u2019s \u201cWelcome to Wrexham\u201d (the two are executive producers on this show as well). But unlike the Welsh football club, Necaxa struggles from a dearth of fandom. In 2003, it found a new home in Aguascalientes, a city more than six times smaller than Mexico City, where most residents already root for powerhouses from the capital like Club Am\u00e9rica and Cruz Azul. As many locals admit in the documentary, Necaxa is their No. 2 team. The actors are trying to sell a stake that values the team at $475 million, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-06-04\/wrexham-afc-weighs-raising-funds-at-up-to-475-million-valuation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Their success has made non-U.S. soccer an attractive investment opportunity. Barriers to entry are low compared to American sports, which have become cost-prohibitive, according to Jordan Gardner, a consultant at Twenty First Group who advises on M&amp;A for U.S. investors in European football. Ripa and Consuelos\u2019 effort to navigate owning a team was chronicled in the ESPN series, \u201cRunning With the Wolves\u201d that aired last month.<\/p>\n<p>As Campobasso F.C. languished in the fifth league, the dream was \u201crestoring it to its onetime glory,\u201d Rizzetta said. He felt it was a less-saturated market than English football, and saw a cultural opening, with 17 million Americans of Italian descent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNecaxa\u201d is hoping that the same opening \u2014 but with Mexican Americans \u2014 will propel its viewership.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-retelling-the-underdog-tale\">Retelling the underdog tale<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cNecaxa\u201d benefits from a built-in audience already aware of Liga MX, which is the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5218686\/2024\/01\/23\/premier-league-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second-most-watched league<\/a> in the U.S. after the English Premier League (with MLS in third). It\u2019s a clear choice that \u201cNecaxa\u201d is almost entirely in Spanish \u2014 barring a few wisecracks in English from Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>But as the behind-the-scenes space gets saturated, narratives need a mark of differentiation even if their underlying template is similar.
