In just this calendar year alone, the actor portrayed Robot #5, aka Gary, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/article\/superman-review-james-gunn-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:in Superman;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">in <em>Superman<\/em><\/a> and reprised his beloved role of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/episode\/tony-gilroy-talks-andor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:K2SO in Andor;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">K2SO in <em>Andor<\/em><\/a>. He\u2019s very used to providing voices and motion capture for these kinds of roles. The man is a pro. After all, he\u2019s played robots on screen for over 20 years. That\u2019s right, did you know Tudyk provided the performance capture and voice for Sonny, the titular NS5 automaton in the 2004 sci-fi hit <em>I, Robot<\/em>? Because of that, Tudyk says, he was cut out of all marketing and press ahead of the movie\u2019s release. Below is his quote, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/alan-tudyk-i-robot-test-screenings-will-smith-1236486844\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:which we saw in Variety.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">which we saw in <em>Variety<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"mb-4 border-l-2 pl-5 italic text-tertiary\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cA lot of people did not know I did Sonny the Robot in <em>I, Robot<\/em>, and there is a reason,\u201d Tudyk said. \u201cThey were doing test audiences for the movie, and they score the characters in this kind of test screening. I got word back: \u2018Alan, you are testing higher than Will Smith.\u2019 And then I was gone. I was done. There was no publicity, and my name was not mentioned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI was so shocked,\u201d he continued. \u201cI was like, \u2018Wait, nobody is going to know I\u2019m in it!\u2019 I put a lot into [that performance]. I had to move like a robot. At the time, I was very upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Upstaging the star, especially in a non-face role, was kind of a no-go in 2004. Sonny is far and away the best character in the movie. Sympathetic and compelling, the plight of a robot charged with murder makes him inherently likeable. Contrast that with Smith\u2019s technophobic, \u201cold school\u201d Detective Del Spooner who is just kind of a grump.
