{"id":1955552,"date":"2025-08-12T08:15:44","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T08:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=1955552"},"modified":"2025-08-12T08:15:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T08:15:44","slug":"gordi-discusses-new-album-like-plasticine-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/gordi-discusses-new-album-like-plasticine-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Gordi Discusses New Album &#8216;Like Plasticine&#8217; and More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/tv\/tv-news\/2025-emmy-nominations-list-79947\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severance<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the hit TV show about people who use a brain implant to split into a personal self (an \u201coutie\u201d) and a work self (an \u201cinnie\u201d), with neither persona able to access memories of the other, may seem like science fiction, but it\u2019s eerily close to how Sophie Payten, aka recording artist Gordi, has had to live her life while creating new album <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/gordi-like-plasticine-album-review-81306\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Plasticine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a junior doctor who worked at Prince of Wales hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, Payten had to manage two professional personas: the celebrated singer-songwriter whose emotive music has won her a legion of fans, and the health professional who had to keep it together during one of modern history\u2019s darkest eras.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve just finished watching the latest season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so I\u2019m kind of thinking in that vein of like, I walk through the hospital doors and suddenly, I switch my brain out.\u201d She smiles. \u201cBut yeah, not quite as dramatic as that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As diametrically opposed as those two roles may seem, Payten suggests they are more linked than they appear on the surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201cThe thing that binds music and medicine together is this sense of connection and storytelling.\u201d \u2014Gordi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe thing that binds music and medicine together is this sense of connection and storytelling,\u201d she says. \u201cIn songwriting, it\u2019s this really unfiltered approach of telling a story and trying to connect with someone out in the ether, or someone at a live show. In a medical setting, it\u2019s someone else\u2019s story, but in the same way I\u2019m having to package it up and redeliver it to the patient in a way that makes sense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cObviously the stark difference is how you allow your emotions to become a part of that process. With songwriting, the more emotions involved, the better the result. But in medicine, you replace feeling everything so deeply with compassion. As an innately emotional person, I definitely find it challenging to sometimes separate all that out. She\u2019s had songs of hers synced in TV shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Walking Dead<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she co-wrote the theme song to the Oscar-nominated animated film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mitchells vs. the Machines<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has performed with the likes of Bon Iver and Phoebe Bridgers, collaborated with Troye Sivan, and has released two critically acclaimed albums, 2017\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reservoir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 2020\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Two Skins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Plasticine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sees Payten stretching her wings even further, exploring territory both dark (the moving, pandemic-inspired \u201cPVC Divide\u201d) and light (\u201cPeripheral Lover\u201d, a Robyn-esque banger that\u2019s Payten\u2019s most upbeat song to date).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gordi - Peripheral Lover (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AeOPt5LdXJ8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m writing an album, it\u2019s happening over the span of a couple of years and like in any life, there are light and dark moments,\u201d she says. \u201cOn balance, there were more dark moments during that period, but I was so weary of the sadness and didn\u2019t want that to dominate the whole record. So I leant as hard as I could into the brighter moments that presented themselves during that period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Writing the album] happened in this context of working a lot in hospitals, but then still reflecting on things like falling in love and coming to terms with my queerness and being proud of that. So I was trying to scatter some brightness amongst the dark.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Payten\u2019s new songs, \u201cLunch at Dune\u201d, managed to snag a famous fan before it was even released after a chance encounter with Coldplay\u2019s Chris Martin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gordi x SOAK - Lunch At Dune (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fDDnT9FCSDk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI got this text message from my manager, and he was like, \u2018Apparently Chris Martin wants to meet with some local artists,\u2019\u201d Payten explains. \u201cSo about seven or eight artists went to meet him, and he asked things like, \u2018Tell me what it\u2019s like being a musician in Australia right now?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was a great night and before he was about to go, he said he wanted to hear a song. We were at a little rehearsal space in Melbourne, and there was a grand piano there, and he was like, \u2018Does anyone here play a piano?\u2019 There was just this silence in the room, so I said, \u2018Yeah, I do.\u2019 I decided to play \u2018Lunch at Dune\u2019, which I\u2019d never really played for anyone before. He was sitting literally one metre from me, looking dead into my eyes, so I just started to freak out midway through the song. I closed my eyes to concentrate and powered through to the end, and when I opened them at the end, he had tears streaming down his face. As an artist, that\u2019s why you do it.
