You read that correctly. <em>Nine!<\/em> Making her debut on screen at just 11-weeks-old, Mills was born into England\u2019s premier acting family \u2014\u00a0an instant prodigy in a lineage spawned from her Oscar-winning father John Mills. He helped cast his daughter in her first movie, 1942\u2019s \u201cIn Which We Serve,\u201d playing, naturally,\u00a0his own daughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt was really a propaganda film for World War II. Noel Coward, of course, co-directed and wrote it and starred in it, and that was David Lean\u2019s directorial debut,\u201d Juliet Mills explained. \u201cAnd so that was my debut too. And as a matter of fact, I\u2019m billed in the cast list. I realized that I wasn\u2019t ever going to be the solo Swan in \u2018Swan Lake.\u2019 I was going to be in the corps de ballet. I was one of those cygnets, and I\u2019d never quite make it. I wasn\u2019t dedicated enough. I wasn\u2019t good enough. And so that\u2019s when I decided, when I was about 14, I wanted to be an actress. And my father\u2026 they certainly were very happy about it and encouraged me to a certain extent, but we never felt any pressure or anything. As long as we enjoyed what we were doing, and we realized also that it was a very insecure profession. There was a lot of luck involved. And if you get lucky, you can maybe make a living at it,\u201d Mills said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mills first found a stroke of luck nabbing a role in the John Gielgud-directed \u201cFive Finger Exercise\u201d on London\u2019s West End. At just 16, the actress had her big break, and when it transferred to Broadway in 1960, Mills earned a Tony nomination. \u201cI didn\u2019t even know what a Tony was. I didn\u2019t. And my parents didn\u2019t sort of make a big fuss about it or anything. So I wasn\u2019t there for the awards or anything,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A series of films followed \u2014\u00a0several of which cast her opposite some of the biggest names on the planet. I saw it recently on TCM, and it\u2019s really good,\u201d said Mills, who added that O\u2019Hara had previously played her mother in a live TV production of \u201cMrs. Miniver\u201d in 1960. \u201cI kept in touch with her, always, ever since then, and in fact, the last time I saw her was at the TCM Film Festival, and she came over from Ireland, where she lived for a long time, and I saw her. We had tea at the Roosevelt Hotel. She was 90, and she was still so beautiful. You know, that alabaster skin, and just gorgeous woman. When I did \u2018The Rare Breed\u2019 with her, she was really breathtaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Also in \u201cThe Rare Breed\u201d cast was the legendary James Stewart, who Mills described as being the \u201ccreme de la creme\u201d of the veteran performers she had an opportunity to act alongside. \u201cMy father was so jealous of me doing a Western with Jimmy Stewart. He always wanted to do a Western, and suddenly, there I am out in California, riding my horse and going on,\u201d Mills chuckled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The elder Mills sister was consistently cast on film and television, quietly building up a stellar career that included guest spots on popular series like \u201cThe Man from U.N.C.L.E.,\u201d \u201cBen Casey,\u201d and \u201c12 O\u2019Clock High.\u201d She\u2019d move permanently to the States to take the lead in \u201cNanny and the Professor,\u201d the hit sitcom which made her known to generations as a whimsical, magical governess.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI was doing a play in London with Tom Courtenay, \u2018She Stoops to Conquer\u2019\u2026. It ran for almost a year, but I got the opportunity to do a test for \u2018Nanny and the Professor\u2019 when I was in the play in London. David Gerber, the producer, came and saw the play and said, \u2018Will you do a screen test for this series?\u2019 And I did, and I got the part, and so they let me out of the play for three weeks to do the pilot,\u201d Mills remembered, adding that the series actually shot two pilots with two different male leads \u2014 \u201cI can\u2019t remember [the original actor\u2019s] name, lucky for him I can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAnd after the play was finished\u2026 I came over here to do the show. I thought I was just coming to do 13 episodes of a half-hour series, and it went on for 54 episodes. In 1972, she starred in one of Billy Wilder\u2019s twilight-era films, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/6-lesser-known-billy-wilder-212454265.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cAvanti!\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">\u201cAvanti!\u201d<\/a> (more on that one next week, stay tuned). It\u2019s all illusion. And Maxwell played the Elephant Man. He was 20 years old at the time, and absolutely dreamy looking, and yet he turned into the Elephant Man \u2014 this deformed creature in front of your eyes, really. The play was so brilliant. So that was definitely one of my favorite parts,\u201d Mills related. \u201cWe had these wonderful roles and we were touring Florida. We actually rehearsed in New York on the 45th floor of the building above the Minskoff Theatre in Times Square. We used to watch the sun set every night over the Hudson River and it was very romantic. And I think we bonded on all levels, frankly, but certainly our love of the theater was one of those bonds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The couple married in 1980, and they will celebrate their 45th anniversary on December 2. Mills was 39 to Caulfield\u2019s 21 when they were wed. \u201cHe\u2019s wonderful to me. He treats me like a queen. We\u2019ve been married 45 years this year. It\u2019s quite a miracle. Some of her most prominent credits have included \u201cThe Other Sister,\u201d \u201cSome Kind of Beautiful,\u201d \u201cPassions\u201d (for which she received a Daytime Emmy nod), \u201cHot in Cleveland,\u201d and a guest arc on \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI was supposed to do a lot more of [\u2018Grey\u2019s\u2019 episodes]. But, you know, the writers strike came along, and instead of 23 episodes, they only did 10. So my storyline went down the toilet, so I didn\u2019t do as many as I should have done episode-wise. But I did enjoy working on that show, I have to say,\u201d Mills said, adding she\u2019d love to return in a future season (it\u2019s about to start No. 22). But what she\u2019d really like to do is get snatched up by Taylor Sheridan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAll those wonderful shows on Netflix that he writes, and directs half of them himself\u2026 writes them all himself. And I don\u2019t know how he does it, but Maxwell did a guest spot on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/landman-review-taylor-sheridan-billy-150000277.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u2018Landman,\u2019;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">\u2018Landman,\u2019<\/a> which is one of my favorite shows.
