Daniel Day-Lewis has emerged from his retirement in a first-look photo of his new film, Anemone<\/em>.<\/p>\n The project from Focus Features is set to have its world premiere at the The New York Film Festival<\/a> \u2014which kicks off Sept. 26th and runs through Oct. 13 \u2014 and marks the return of the three-time Oscar winner after an eight-year \u201cretirement.\u201d<\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n The film marks the feature directorial debut of Lewis\u2019 son, Ronan Day-Lewis, and was co-written by both men.<\/p>\n The official description of Anemone<\/em> calls the film \u201can absorbing family drama \u2026 about lives undone by seemingly irreconcilable legacies of political and personal violence.\u201d Set in Northern England, the film follows a middle-aged man (Sean Bean) who \u201csets out from his suburban home on a journey into the woods, where he reconnects with his estranged hermit brother (Day-Lewis). Bonded by a mysterious, complicated past, the men share a fraught, if occasionally tender relationship\u2014one that was forever altered by shattering events decades earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n Continues the description: \u201cAn emotional powerhouse, this directorial debut is assured in both small details and grand gestures as it charts the path toward familial redemption against all odds. In addition to its unflinching lead performances,\u00a0Anemone<\/em>\u00a0features standout supporting work from Samantha Morton and Samuel Bottomley, and sensationally expressive widescreen cinematography by Ben Fordesman.\u201d<\/p>\n Anemone<\/em> is Day-Lewis\u2019 first feature film since 2017\u2019s Phantom Thread<\/em>. Before the film\u2019s release, the actor had issued a statement: \u201cDaniel Day-Lewis\u00a0will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely\u00a0grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.\u00a0This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will\u00a0make any further comment on this subject.\u201d<\/p>\n He elaborated in an interview with W <\/em>magazine<\/a>, \u201cI knew it was uncharacteristic to put out a statement. But I did want to draw a line. I didn\u2019t want to get sucked back into another project. All my life, I\u2019ve mouthed off about how I should stop acting, and I don\u2019t know why it was different this time, but the impulse to quit took root in me, and that became a compulsion. It was something I had to do \u2026 I dread to use the overused word \u2018artist,\u2019 but there\u2019s something of the responsibility of the artist that hung over me. I need to believe in the value of what I\u2019m doing. The work can seem vital. Irresistible, even. And if an audience believes it, that should be good enough for me.
