Oscar watchers, start your engines. The Gotham Film & Media Institute has booked Dec. 1 as the date for the 35th edition of the Gotham Film Awards. Submissions for the ceremony’s 10 categories are open now through Sept. 18 with awards handed out at Cipriani Wall Street the week after the Thanksgiving holiday.<\/p>\n
“We\u2019re thrilled to continue honoring breakthrough and established creators while championing the bold, original storytelling that shapes our cultural landscape,\u201d\u00a0Gotham Institute executive director Jeffrey Sharp<\/strong> said in a statement provided to Gold Derby. “Each year, the Gothams serve as a vibrant reflection of cinema\u2019s evolving landscape \u2014 this milestone year promises to celebrate the artists redefining the boundaries of the medium while capturing audiences around the world.”<\/p>\n More from Gold Derby<\/strong><\/p>\n In recent years, the Gothams have also served as the kick-off to the wave of awards ceremonies that ultimately crest with the Oscars, set to air on March 15, 2026 on ABC and Hulu. It’s an early indication of how the field is taking shape, and can particularly provide smaller films with a big boost. Last year, for example, RaMell Ross<\/strong>‘s acclaimed drama Nickel Boys<\/em> scored victories for Best Director and Breakthrough Performer for its star Brandon Wilson<\/strong>, putting it on a path towards eventual Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay nominations at the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n Similarly, A24’s prison drama Sing Sing<\/em> saw a renewed burst of energy following its dual Gotham wins for Colman Domingo<\/strong> as Best Actor and Clarence Maclin<\/strong> for Best Supporting Actor. When Oscar nominations were announced, Domingo received his second Best Actor nod, while Maclin shared recognition for Best Adapted Screenplay. (Sing Sing<\/em> was also nominated for Best Original Song.)<\/p>\n Following the Sept. 18 submission deadline, Gotham nominees will be officially unveiled on Oct. 28. The full list of categories include: Best Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best International Feature, Best Director, Breakthrough Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Lead Performance, Best Supporting Performance, and Breakthrough Performer.<\/p>\n And the Dec. 1 ceremony will be followed by an avalanche of awards activity. Critics Choice film nominations will be announced on Dec. 5, followed by Golden Globe nominations on Dec. 8, with the accompanying ceremonies scheduled for Jan. 4 and Jan. 11, respectively.
