Sarah McLachlan\u2019<\/strong>s<\/a> newest single \u201cGravity\u201d hits close to home emotionally for the singer.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Variety<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Monday, August 11, McLachlan, 57, divulged how much she loved performing the song after it was inspired by the \u201ccombative and fraught relationship\u201d with her eldest daughter. (McLachlan shares daughters India Ann Sushil Sood<\/strong>, 23, and Taja Summer Sood<\/strong>, 18, with her ex-husband Ashwin Sood<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI love playing this song because of the challenges that I went through with my firstborn daughter. It feels really sweet to be able to sing this song and know that we\u2019re in such a better place, having come through this really challenging time together,\u201d she told the outlet.<\/p>\n

Variety<\/em> also noted a press statement in which McLachlan said of the song: \u201cFor a long time my daughter and I had a very combative and fraught relationship, and what I came to realize is that so much of what I perceived as obstinance or rage was actually masking a ton of anxiety on her part.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOver the years, stars including Jennette McCurdy and Macaulay Culkin have discussed hitting rock bottom with their parents. Jennette broke down the abuse she faced because of her mother, Debra McCurdy, in her memoir, I Am Glad My Mom Died. \u201cOf course, there are moments where I fantasize that my mom would\u2019ve apologized or that [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She continued: \u201cWe went to counseling together, and I learned that she felt so alone and unvalidated by me \u2014 which was devastating to hear, but it led us both to change the way we communicate with each other. I wrote \u2018Gravity\u2019 as a way of saying to her, \u2018I\u2019ve always loved you and want the best for you, and you\u2019re perfect the way you are.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

McLachlan gushed over the emotional single, pinpointing it as one of her favorites on her new Better Broken<\/em> album, which will hit shelves on September 19.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s one of the strongest tracks, if not the strongest track, on the record. It\u2019s highly emotional, and because I\u2019ve had the opportunity to play it to other people for a year or two, the connection that people have had to it has been pretty immediate and intense,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

McLachlan has long drawn on her personal relationships when creating music, including her divorce<\/a> from her daughters\u2019 father, Ashwin, in 2008.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, the marriage part<\/a> didn\u2019t quite work out,\u201d she told Spinner<\/em> in 2011. \u201cApparently that\u2019s a bit of an epidemic, so I just make light of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cComing to terms with the fact that my marriage was a failure was devastating and very difficult. I blamed myself for a lot of things. It took me a very long time to get over it.\u201d<\/p>\n
